THIS STUDY WOULD PROVIDE THE FIRST SATELLITE IDENTIFICATION OF OCEAN CIRCULATION TEMPORAL MAGNETIC FIELD VARIATIONS AS WELL AS THE FIRST ESTIMATE OF OCEAN TRANSPORT FROM SATELLITE MAGNETIC DATA. THIS WILL PROVIDE AN INNOVATIVE TOOL FOR OCEANOGRAPHIC REMOTE SENSING AS WELL AS FURTHER ENABLE THE INTEGRATION OF SATELLITE- AIRCRAFT- AND SURFACE-BASED MEASUREMENTS IN CONJUNCTION WITH MODELS AND SIMULATIONS OF OCEANIC MAGNETIC FIELDS. BECAUSE OCEANIC MAGNETIC FIELDS BEAR THE SIGNATURE OF THE WATER TRANSPORT BY ISOLATING OCEANIC MAGNETIC SIGNALS THE DEPTH-INTEGRATED VELOCITY (A CRUCIAL PARAMETER FOR GENERAL CIRCULATION AND CLIMATE MODELS) NEEDED TO PRODUCE THE MAGNETIC SIGNAL CAN BE EASILY DETERMINED HELPING ANSWER THE NESSF SOLICITATION QUESTION `HOW IS THE GLOBAL EARTH SYSTEM CHANGING?'. WE PLAN ON FOCUSING ON IDENTIFYING SIGNALS FROM THE ANTARCTIC CIRCUMPOLAR CURRENT (ACC) THE KUROSHIO CURRENT (KC) AND ARCTIC OCEAN CURRENTS (LIKELY TO BE UNDER SEA-ICE). THE WORK WILL PRIMARILY BE DONE BY THE STUDENT (NEESHA R. SCHNEPF) UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF DR. MANOJ C. NAIR (NATIONAL OCEANIC&ATMOSPHERIC ADMINISTRATION'S GEOMAGNETISM TEAM) AND PROF. ANNE F. SHEEHAN.
