THE UBIQUITOUS RIDGE-TROUGH SYSTEMS ALSO KNOWN AS RIDGED PLAINS ON EUROPA AND ENCELADUS ARE RELATIVELY UNEXAMINED DUE TO THEIR SMALL-SCALE (100-400 M WIDE) AND COMPLEX MORPHOLOGY. I PROPOSE TO COMBINE OBSERVATIONS FROM GEOMORPHOLOGICAL AND STRUCTURAL MAPPING WITH MY NEWLY DEVELOPED TWO-LAYER ANALOGUE EXPERIMENTS TO ANALYZE POTENTIAL FORMATION MECHANISMS OF RIDGE-TROUGH SYSTEMS. THESE EXPERIMENTS ARE APPLICABLE TO ICY BODIES WHERE THERE IS A BRITTLE SURFACE AND DUCTILE SUB-SURFACE SUCH AS ON EUROPA AND ENCELADUS. ICY SATELLITE MODELS TYPICALLY SEPARATE THE BRITTLE AND DUCTILE LAYERS BUT THE PROPOSED TWO-LAYER PHYSICAL EXPERIMENTS MODEL THE INTERACTION BETWEEN LAYERS REVEALING THE EFFECT ON SURFACE STRUCTURE MORPHOLOGY. SPECIFICALLY I WILL FOCUS ON THE MORPHOLOGY AND STRUCTURE OF RIDGE-TROUGH SYSTEMS IMAGED IN THE HIGHEST RESOLUTION BY THE GALILEO MISSION E12 FLYBY OF EUROPA (12-26 M/PX) AND CASSINI MISSION E8 FLYBY OF ENCELADUS (50 M/PX). THIS DETAILED ANALYSIS IS CRITICAL TO UNDERSTANDING 1) THE EVOLUTION SURFACE THROUGH VISIBLE TIME 2) THE THICKNESS OF THE OUTER BRITTLE ICE LAYER AND THEREFORE THE HEAT FLUX AND 3) THE RHEOLOGY OF THE SURFACE ICE. AS SUCH THIS PROJECT HAS IMPLICATIONS FOR FUTURE LANDER MISSIONS AND THE POTENTIAL FOR THESE ICY BODIES TO HARBOR EXTRATERRESTRIAL LIFE. THOUGH THESE HIGH-RESOLUTION IMAGES COMPRISE A SMALL PORTION (<1%) OF THE TOTAL SURFACE AREA OF THESE BODIES THE ANALYSIS OF THESE REGIONS CAN BE PROJECTED TO GLOBALLY AS THESE RIDGE-TROUGH TERRAINS MAKE UP LARGE PORTIONS (>50% ON EUROPA AND ENCELADUS) OF THE SURFACE NOT YET IMAGED IN HIGH-RESOLUTION (CROW-WILLARD AND PAPPALARDO 2015 GREELEY ET AL. 2000). BY COMBINING REMOTE SENSING OBSERVATIONS FROM THE MAPPING WITH THE ANALOGUE DATA I WILL APPROACH THE FORMATION OF SURFACE STRUCTURES ON ICY BODIES FROM A UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE. IN THE FUTURE THE MAPPING COULD BE EXPANDED TO MANY OTHER ICY BODIES INCLUDING TRITON MIRANDA ARIEL AND EVEN PLUTO.
