TITAN SATURN S LARGEST SATELLITE IS THE ONLY OTHER MOON TO HAVE A THICK ATMOSPHERE AND THE ONLY PLANETARY BODY OTHER THAN EARTH WITH STABLE BODIES OF LIQUID ON ITS SURFACE. HOWEVER ON TITAN THESE BODIES OF LIQUID ARE NOT WATER RATHER LAKES OF LIQUID METHANE AND ETHANE DUE TO THE EXTREMELY COLD SURFACE TEMPERATURES (~ 94 K). SIMILAR TO EARTH S WATER CYCLE TITAN HAS A METHANE CYCLE WHERE THE METHANE WILL EVENTUALLY EVAPORATE LEAVING BEHIND DIFFERENT ORGANIC COMPOUNDS. HOWEVER CURRENT DATA DOES NOT PROVIDE ANY INSIGHT ABOUT THE COMPOSITION UNDERLYING CHEMISTRY OR SPECTRAL PROPERTIES OF THESE EVAPORITE DEPOSITS ON TITAN. THIS STUDY AIMS TO CONSTRAIN THE COMPOSITION AND COMPOSITIONAL VARIABILITY OF TITAN S EVAPORITE DEPOSITS USING AN EXPERIMENTAL TITAN CHAMBER. THESE QUESTIONS WILL BE ANSWERED BY TWO OBJECTIVES: 1. THE FIRST OBJECTIVE IS TO CHARACTERIZE THE SOLUBILITY OF SOLUTES IN LIQUID METHANE AND ETHANE. 2. THE SECOND OBJECTIVE IS TO ANALYZE THE COMPOSITION OF THE RESIDUAL SOLID AFTER COMPLETE EVAPORATION OF THE LIQUID PHASE SPECIFICALLY FOCUSING ON BINARY MIXTURES OF SOLUTES. WHEN PERFORMING SOLUBILITY AND EVAPORATION EXPERIMENTS THE TITAN CHAMBER IS FIRST PURGED WITH NITROGEN FOR 10 MINUTES FOLLOWED BY A 10-MINUTE CONDENSER PURGE. LIQUID NITROGEN IS THEN TURNED ON TO INITIATE COOLING OF THE CHAMBER. COLLECTION OF TEMPERATURE AND MASS DATA IS STARTED USING LABVIEW SOFTWARE. AFTER THE CHAMBER/CONDENSER PURGE AND LIQUID NITROGEN FLOW IS INITIATED BACKGROUND FTIR SPECTRA OF THE PETRI DISH IS COLLECTED. FOR SOLUBILITY AND EVAPORITE EXPERIMENTS THE SOLUTE IS FIRST CONDENSED IN ITS SOLID FORM PHASE BEFORE METHANE OR ETHANE (LIQUID PHASE) ARE ADDED TO THE CONDENSER TO DISSOLVE THE SOLUTE. AFTER THE SOLVENT HAS HAD TIME TO DISSOLVE THE SOLUTE (~10 MINUTES) THE MIXTURE EXITS THE BOTTOM OF THE CONDENSER THROUGH AN OPENED SOLENOID VALVE AND FILTER LEADING TO THE PETRI DISH. NOW THAT THE MIXTURE HAS BEEN TRANSFERRED TO THE PETRI DISH FTIR SPECTRAL MEASUREMENTS ARE TAKEN. TITAN SURFACE TEMPERATURES (90 K 94 K) ARE SUSTAINED AFTER THE MIXTURE IS POURED ONTO THE SPECTRALON IN THE PETRI DISH IN ORDER TO DETERMINE WHICH MIXTURES EVAPORATE AT TITAN TEMPERATURES.
