MICROORGANISMS ARE OF CONCERN AS SOURCES OF FORWARD CONTAMINATION OF EXTRATERRESTRIAL BODIES WITH TERRESTRIAL MICROORGANISMS PARTICULARLY WITH THE EUROPA LANDER MISSION IN WHICH SPACECRAFT HARDWARE WILL MAKE CONTACT WITH THE MOON SURFACE. OF SPECIFIC CONCERN IS THE SEGMENT OF BULK INSULATION OF THE EUROPA LANDER DE-ORBIT STAGE THAT WILL BE VULCANIZED SEPARATELY AND BONDED TO THE CASE AFTER PROPELLENT ADDITION. PRELIMINARY DATA INDICATES THAT THE BONDLINE ADHESIVES AND PRIMER USED TO ATTACH ROCKET MOTOR INSULATION TO THE CASE HAVE THE ABILITY TO INHIBIT THE GROWTH OF MICROORGANISMS THAT HAVE BEEN CULTURED FROM INSULATION MATERIAL. THIS STUDY HAS SEVEN OBJECTIVES OBJECTIVE 1: IDENTIFY BACTERIAL ISOLATES IDENTIFIED FROM ROCKET MOTOR INSULATION OBJECTIVE 2: TEST BACTERIAL ISOLATES FOR THEIR SUSCEPTIBILITY TO BONDLINE PRIMER OR ADHESIVE FORMULATIONS IN A QUANTITATIVE BIOASSAY OBJECTIVE 3: DETERMINE MINIMUM INHIBITORY CONCENTRATIONS FOR EACH BONDLINE PRIMER OR ADHESIVE FORMULATION FOR VEGETATIVE CELLS AND SPORES OBJECTIVE 4: DETERMINE MINIMUM BACTERICIDAL CONCENTRATIONS (MBC) FOR EACH BONDLINE PRIMER OR ADHESIVE FORMULATION FOR VEGETATIVE CELLS AND SPORES OBJECTIVE 5: DETERMINE REDUCTION IN BACTERIAL COLONY FORMING UNITS FOR BIOACTIVE PRIMER OR ADHESIVE FORMULATIONS OBJECTIVE 6: EVALUATE ADDITIONAL BACTERIAL CULTURES AND BONDLINE ADHESIVE FORMULATIONS DERIVED FROM NASA OPERATIONS AND OBJECTIVE 7: EVALUATE THE EFFECTS OF BONDLINE PRIMER AND/OR ADHESIVE FORMULATIONS ON THE MICROBIOME ASSOCIATED WITH ROCKET ASSEMBLY. THE RESULTS DERIVED FROM THESE STUDIES WILL DETERMINE THE EFFICACY OF BONDLINE ADHESIVE AND/OR PRIMER FORMULATIONS IN INHIBITING THE GROWTH AND/OR VIABILITY OF SPORE-FORMING AND OTHER MICROORGANISMS ASSOCIATED WITH THE CLEAN ROOM ENVIRONMENT THEREBY ENABLING BIOBURDEN REDUCTIONS TO PREVENT FORWARD CONTAMINATION OF THE EUROPA SURFACE.
