THE OBJECTIVE OF THE PROPOSED WORK IS TO ELUCIDATE THE AQUEOUS STRATIGRAPHY IN NOACHIS TERRA IN ORDER TO PROVIDE INSIGHTS INTO THE CRUSTAL EVOLUTION AND ALTERATION HISTORY OF THE REGION. THE NOACHIS TERRA REGION DISPLAYS A DIVERSITY OF SPECTRAL AND MORPHOLOGICAL UNITS AND INCLUDES BOTH NOACHIAN AND HESPERIAN AGED SURFACES. IMPORTANTLY NOACHIS TERRA ALSO HOSTS AN ABUNDANCE OF CHLORIDE-BEARING SITES AS WELL AS DETECTIONS OF PHYLLOSILICATES AND SULFATES. TO DATE NO STUDIES HAVE YET SOUGHT TO INTEGRATE HIGH-RESOLUTION COMPOSITIONAL AND STRATIGRAPHIC INFORMATION FOR THE NOACHIS TERRA REGION. IN ORDER TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE AQUEOUS ALTERATION PROCESSES THAT HAVE OCCURRED WE PROPOSE TO COMPLETE A COMPREHENSIVE REGIONAL-SCALE STUDY OF THE ALTERATION MATERIALS AND THEIR HOST ROCK IN THIS AREA. THE METHODOLOGY WE WILL EMPLOY TO ADDRESS OUR OBJECTIVE WILL INVOLVE USING SPECTRAL DATA FROM CRISM TES AND THEMIS TO CHARACTERIZE THE SURFACE. WE WILL INVESTIGATE THE COMPOSITION THERMOPHYSICAL PROPERTIES AND LOCAL CONTEXT AND GEOMORPHOLOGY OF AQUEOUS MATERIALS AND THEIR ADJACENT TERRAINS IN AN EFFORT TO INTERPRET THEIR POSSIBLE ORIGIN. INVESTIGATING THE MINERALOGY OF ADJACENT TERRAINS WILL HELP DETERMINE THE DEGREE OF ALTERATION THAT HAS OCCURRED. TO UNDERSTAND THE SPATIAL EXTENT OF ALTERATION AND POTENTIAL FOR EPISODIC EVENTS WE WILL PLACE THE AQUEOUS MATERIALS WITHIN THE REGION (E.G. PHYLLOSILICATES SULFATES HYDRATED SILICA CHLORIDES ETC) INTO A REGIONAL STRATIGRAPHIC FRAMEWORK IN ORDER TO DETERMINE MAJOR GEOLOGIC EVENTS. A MAJOR FOCUS OF THIS WORK WILL BE TO PLACE THE CHLORIDE-BEARING MATERIALS INTO THE BROADER GEOLOGIC CONTEXT TO ADDRESS OUTSTANDING QUESTIONS ABOUT THE TIMING DURATION AND CONDITIONS OF THE PROCESSES THAT DEPOSITED THESE MATERIALS. THE PROPOSED WORK WILL IMPROVE OUR CURRENT UNDERSTANDING OF THE DIVERSITY OF AQUEOUS MINERALS IN NOACHIS TERRA AND WILL PROVIDE INSIGHTS INTO THE TIMING EXTENT AND DURATION OF ALTERATION OF THE REGION. THE PROPOSED INVESTIGATION ENHANCES SCIENTIFIC RETURN OF FROM MARS ODYSSEY MARS GLOBAL SURVEYOR MARS EXPRESS AND MARS RECONNAISSANCE ORBITER MISSIONS THROUGH GEOLOGIC ANALYSIS AND SYNTHESIS OF DATA FROM THOSE MISSIONS AND IS THUS WITHIN THE SCOPE OF THE MARS DATA ANALYSIS PROGRAM. THROUGH INVESTIGATION OF THE PROCESSES THAT FORMED AND MODIFIED THE SURFACE OF THE NOACHIS TERRA REGION OUR PROPOSED RESEARCH WILL ADDRESS THE FIRST OF TWO MAJOR MARS GEOLOGY OBJECTIVES DEFINED IN THE PLANETARY SCIENCE DECADAL SURVEY (2013-2022): DETERMINE THE NATURE AND EVOLUTION OF THE GEOLOGIC PROCESSES THAT HAVE CREATED AND MODIFIED THE MARTIAN CRUST OVER TIME.
