ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING DEVELOPMENTS IN EXOPLANET SCIENCE IS THE INCLUSION OF A CORONA- GRAPH INSTRUMENT ON THE WIDE FIELD INFRA-RED SPACE TELESCOPE (WFIRST). AFTER MORE THAN 20 YEARS OF RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT ON CORONAGRAPHY AND WAVEFRONT CONTROL HIGH-CONTRAST IMAGING TECHNOLOGY IS READY FOR A DEMONSTRATION IN SPACE WITH ACCOMPANYING REVOLUTIONARY SCIENCE. EXCELLENT PROGRESS IS BEING MADE AT THE JET PROPULSION LABORATORY (JPL) AND THE GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER (GSFC) BOTH IN THE DESIGN OF THE CORONAGRAPH INSTRUMENT (CGI) FOR WFIRST AND IN LABORATORY TESTING OF KEY TECHNOLOGIES PARTICULARLY WAVEFRONT CONTROL APPROACHES. A KEY ELEMENT OF THE CGI IS AN INTEGRAL _ELD SPECTROGRAPH (IFS). THE IFS WILL PRODUCE MODERATE RESOLUTION SPECTRA OF KEY TARGETS AS WELL AS PROVIDE BROADBAND MEASUREMENTS TO BE USED IN THE WAVEFRONT ESTIMATION AND CONTROL ALGORITHMS. LIKE THE REST OF CGI THE IFS IS A RELATIVELY NEW TECHNOLOGY THAT HAS NEVER BEEN USED IN SPACE BEFORE. LIKEWISE THERE IS NO LABORATORY DEMONSTRATION OF AN IFS IN CLOSED LOOP BROADBAND WAVEFRONT CONTROL. THE PISCES IFS DEVELOPED AT GODDARD AS A PROTOTYPE HAS BEEN DELIVERED TO JPL AND IS SOON TO BEGIN TESTING. HOWEVER A MORE EXIBLE ENVIRONMENT THAT ALLOWS RAPID TURNAROUND AND QUICK EXPERIMENTS IS DESIRABLE TO COMPLEMENT THE VACUUM FACILITIES AT JPL. THE PRINCETON HIGH-CONTRAST IMAGING LABORATORY IS WELL SUITED TO THAT TASK. WITH ITS EXISTING CORONAGRAPH DEFORMABLE MIRRORS AND CLEAN ENVIRONMENT IT CAN BE USED FOR RAPID PROTOTYPING OF SENSING AND CONTROL ALGORITHMS BEFORE THEIR USE ON PISCES AT JPL. THIS PROPOSAL DESCRIBES SUCH AN E_ORT INCLUDING BOTH THE DEVELOPMENT OF ALGO- RITHMS AND SIMULATION AS WELL AS THE CONSTRUCTION OF AN INEXPENSIVE BENCHTOP IFS FOR RAPID EXPERIMENTATION.
