WE HAVE DISCOVERED NEW FEATURES AT IO'S SODIUM NEUTRAL CLOUDS DURING A GROUND-BASED SPECTROSCOPIC OBSERVATION CAMPAIGN THAT PROMISES TO SHED LIGHT ON THE RELATIVE IMPORTANCE OF ESCAPE PROCESSES AT PLAY AT IO. THESE FEATURES ARE: 1) A BLUE-SHIFTED EMISSION FEATURE VISIBLE IN SOME OF OUR SPECTRA INDICATING SODIUM STREAMING AWAY FROM IO AT A FAST VELOCITY (TENS OF KM/S RELATIVE TO IO); 2) A "BUMP" OR "SKIRT" IN THE MAIN EMISSION LINE VISIBLE IN ALL OF OUR SPECTRA WITH DIFFERENT DIMENSIONS INDICATING A MODERATE MOTION OF NEUTRALS (FEW KM/S RELATIVE TO IO); 3) A "DIP" OR ABSORPTION VISIBLE IN ALL OF OUR SPECTRA (WITH DIFFERENT INTENSITY) IN THE NEUTRAL CLOUDS LYING ON TOP OF IO'S DISK INDICATING A MOTION OF THE NEUTRAL CLOUDS AWAY FROM IO. THE FOLLOWING KEY QUESTIONS ARISE FROM THIS DISCOVERY: 1) WHAT IS THE NATURE OF THE NEWLY DISCOVERED ESCAPE PROCESSES? 2) WHAT DRIVES THE MOTION OF THE NEUTRAL CLOUDS RELATIVE TO IO? WE WILL ANSWER THESE SCIENTIFIC QUESTIONS IN A FOCUSED 2-YEAR PROPOSAL. WE WILL APPLY OUR WELL-TESTED MONTE CARLO SIMULATION OF IO'S NEUTRAL CLOUDS TO OUR DATASET WHICH COVERS A VAST RANGE IN ORBITAL LONGITUDES MAGNETIC LATITUDE/LONGITUDE AND YEARS. WE WILL VARY THE PARAMETERS OF THE CODE (SUCH AS EJECTION SPEED DISTRIBUTION AND EJECTION LOCATION) TO CONSTRAIN THE NATURE OF THESE PROCESSES. THE RESULTS OF OUR WORK WILL PROVIDE THE MUCH NEEDED CRITICAL CONNECTION BETWEEN IO'S NEUTRAL CORONA AND JUPITER'S MAGNETOSPHERE. IN FACT IO PLAYS A FUNDAMENTAL ROLE IN SHAPING AND SUPPLYING JUPITER'S MAGNETOSPHERE. ESCAPING GAS FROM IO'S ATMOSPHERE ORIGINATED ITS INTENSE VOLCANIC ACTIVITY IS THE SOURCE FOR IO'S NEUTRAL CLOUDS WHICH UPON IONIZATION FROM THE IONS CO-ROTATING WITH JUPITER ARE THE DIRECT SOURCE FOR THE IO PLASMA TORUS. IN TURN SUCH PLASMA IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE COMPLEX COUPLING BETWEEN IO AND JUPITER'S MAGNETOSPHERE THAT FEEDS JUPITER'S AURORAE ONE OF THE SCIENTIFIC TARGETS OF NASA'S JUNO MISSION. CLARIFYING THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN IO'S ATMOSPHERE THE PLASMA TORUS AND THE NEUTRAL CLOUDS IS OF FUNDAMENTAL IMPORTANCE FOR OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE ENTIRE JOVIAN SYSTEM. THIS PROPOSAL IS RELEVANT TO THE ROSES SSW CALL SINCE IT SEEKS TO "CHARACTERIZE THE NEUTRAL AND PLASMA SOURCES IN PLANETARY MAGNETOSPHERES" AND TO "DETERMINE MASS AND ENERGY EXCHANGE OF PLASMA WITH ATMOSPHERES AND SURFACES" TWO MAIN AREAS OF RESEARCH LISTED IN THE SSW CALL. ANALYSIS OF GROUND-BASED DATA IS WITHIN THE SCOPE OF SSW. RESULTS OF THIS WORK WILL BE COMPLEMENTARY TO OBSERVATIONS FROM JUNO AND IN PARTICULAR TO JUNO-UVS WHICH PERFORMS IN SITU MEASUREMENTS OF PLASMA AND PARTICLES BUT CANNOT STUDY IO'S TORUS EMISSIONS THEREFORE PROVIDING THE KEY TO UNDERSTAND THE INTERCHANGE BETWEEN NEUTRALS AND PLASMA WHICH GIVES RISE TO THE COMPLEX IO-JUPITER MAGNETOSPHERIC INTERACTION.
