IN ORDER TO RETRIEVE COMPOSITIONAL AND THERMOPHYSICAL INFORMATION FROM THE SPECTRAL DATA ACQUIRED BY THE OSIRIS-REX THERMAL EMISSION SPECTROMETER (OTES) AND OSIRIS-REX VISIBLE AND INFRARED SPECTROMETER (OVIRS) INSTRUMENTS AN UNDERSTANDING OF SURFACE ROUGHNESS AND ROCK ABUNDANCE AND THEIR EFFECTS ON EMITTED RADIANCE IS ESSENTIAL. SURFACE ANISOTHERMALITY DUE TO SURFACE ROUGHNESS AND ROCK ABUNDANCE CAN BE PERVASIVE COMPLICATING AND HINDERING THE COMPOSITIONAL AND THERMOPHYSICAL INTERPRETATION OF SPECTRAL DATASETS. WE WILL USE A SURFACE ROUGHNESS THERMAL MODEL TO ACCOUNT FOR ANISOTHERMALITY AND CORRECT FOR EMITTED RADIANCE IN OVIRS SPECTRA. PROPER CORRECTION IS CRUCIAL FOR THE IDENTIFICATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF OH AND H2O ABSORPTIONS NEAR 3 UM AS WELL AS OTHER ABSORPTIONS. IN ADDITION WE WILL IMPLEMENT A ROUGHNESS-BASED CORRECTION FOR OTES MEASUREMENTS WHICH ARE LIKELY TO HAVE BROAD AND PROMINENT SPECTRAL SLOPES THAT ARE AN EFFECT OF ANISOTHERMALITY. WITHOUT THIS CORRECTION THESE SLOPES WOULD BE PRESENT IN EMISSIVITY DATA AND CAN MODIFY THE SHAPE OF SPECTRAL ABSORPTIONS AND RESULT IN A SHORTER WAVELENGTH CHRISTIANSEN FEATURE IN SILICATE MATERIALS. THE WORK PROPOSED HERE HAS FOUR PRIMARY GOALS: 1) DEVELOP AND APPLY A SURFACE ROUGHNESS THERMAL MODEL TO THE CORRECTION OF OTES AND OVIRS SPECTRAL DATASETS TO SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVE BOTH COMPOSITIONAL AND SURFACE TEMPERATURE INTERPRETATIONS. 2) DERIVE AND MAP THE SURFACE ROCK ABUNDANCE FROM NIGHTTIME OTES MEASUREMENTS. 3) DOCUMENT DIRECTIONAL EMISSIVITY EFFECTS TO CHARACTERIZE HEMISPHERICAL EMISSIVITY ON BENNU. 4) SUPPORT OSIRIS-REX OPERATIONS BY PROVIDING TARGETING STRATEGIES CALIBRATION ASSESSMENT AND DATASET PRODUCTION. THE PRIMARY GOALS LISTED HERE SUPPORT THE GOALS OF THE OSIRIS-REX PARTICIPATING SCIENTIST PROGRAM BY ENHANCING THE SCIENTIFIC RETURN OF THE MISSION. IN PARTICULAR THESE GOALS WILL ENABLE AN IMPROVED UNDERSTANDING OF COMPOSITIONAL AND THERMOPHYSICAL PROPERTIES BY PROVIDING DATA THAT DIRECTLY SUPPORTS AND ENHANCES EXISTING MISSION GOALS OF THE SPECTRAL ANALYSIS AND THERMAL ANALYSIS WORKING GROUPS. ALL DATA PRODUCTS WILL BE MADE PUBLICLY AVAILABLE EITHER THROUGH THE PLANETARY DATA SYSTEM (PDS) OR ALONG WITH PEER REVIEWED PUBLICATIONS.
