THE LAUNCH OF THE JAMES WEBB SPACE TELESCOPE (JWST) WILL MARK AN EXCITING NEW ROUND OFDISCOVERY IN THE STUDY OF ACTIVE GALACTIC NUCLEI (AGN) STARBURST GALAXIES AND PROTOGALAXIES.JWST WILL STUDY MOLECULAR AND LOW IONIZATION REGIONS AT LOW REDSHIFT AND IONIZED GASIN THE UV AT HIGH REDSHIFT. FIGURES 1 AND 2 TAKEN FROM A REVIEW ARTICLE I DID FOR THEICAMDATA ATOMIC DATA WORKSHOP SERIES SHOWS THE DIFFERENT SPECTRAL REGIONS JWSTWILL PROBE. NIRSPEC AND MIRI COVER THE SPECTRAL REGION FROM 0.6 UM TO 50 UM AT LOWREDSHIFT AND CORRESPONDINGLY SHORTER WAVELENGTHS AT HIGHER REDSHIFT AS INDICATED BYTHE AXES ON THE RIGHT OF EACH FIGURE. THE INFRARED BAND ACCESSIBLE AT LOW REDSHIFT CANPEER THROUGH DUST TO DETECT NEARLY ALL PARTS OF A GALAXY WHILE DETECTING MATTER WITH AWIDE RANGE OF IONIZATION AND CHEMICAL STATE. THE OPTICAL/UV BAND ACCESSIBLE AT HIGHREDSHIFT DETECTS WARM IONIZED REGIONS IN EMISSION AND IN ABSORPTION INTERVENING GASWITH A WIDE RANGE OF PROPERTIES.
