THE SUOMI NATIONAL POLAR-ORBITING PARTNERSHIP VISIBLE INFRARED IMAGING RADIOMETER SUITE (S-NPP/VIIRS) ACTIVE FIRE PRODUCT BUILDS ON THE HERITAGE NASA EARTH OBSERVING SYSTEM (EOS) MODERATE RESOLUTION IMAGING SPECTRORADIOMETER (MODIS) FIRE AND THERMAL ANOMALIES PRODUCT (MOD14 AND MYD14) USING A HYBRID FIXED-THRESHOLD AND CONTEXTUAL METHOD TO DETECT DAY AND NIGHTTIME SUB-PIXEL BIOMASS BURNING ACTIVITY AS WELL AS OTHER HIGH TEMPERATURE SOURCES SUCH AS GAS-FLARES VOLCANIC LAVA FLOW ETC. THE S-NPP/VIIRS ACTIVE FIRE PRODUCT BRIDGES THE CURRENT EOS FIRE DATA RECORD WITH THE UPCOMING JOINT POLAR SATELLITE SYSTEM (JPSS) PROVIDING CONTINUITY TO THE MODIS TIME SERIES INTO THE NEXT DECADE. THIS PROPOSAL EXPANDS ON THE SUCCESSFUL IMPLEMENTATION OF THE BASELINE VIIRS 750 M RESOLUTION ACTIVE FIRE ALGORITHM DURING THE PREVIOUS FUNDING CYCLE (A.29 - SUOMI NATIONAL POLAR-ORBITING PARTNERSHIP (NPP) SCIENCE TEAM AND SCIENCE INVESTIGATOR-LED PROCESSING SYSTEMS FOR EARTH SYSTEM DATA RECORDS FROM SUOMI-NPP) ADDING A NEW AND PROVEN ACTIVE FIRE DATA SET THAT UTILIZES THE COMPLEMENTARY SET OF 375 M RESOLUTION DATA FROM THAT INSTRUMENT. THE BASELINE VIIRS 750 M FIRE PRODUCT MIMICS THE MODIS COLLECTION 6 ALGORITHM PROVIDING ENHANCED EOS DATA CONTINUITY CAPABILITY. AS A RESULT OF THE PREVIOUS EFFORT THE VIIRS 750 M ACTIVE FIRE ALGORITHM WAS TRANSITIONED TO THE LAND SCIENCE INVESTIGATOR-LED PROCESSING SYSTEM (SIPS) AND THE DATA INGESTED INTO THE LAND PROCESSES DISTRIBUTED ACTIVE ARCHIVE CENTER (LPDAAC) ACCOMPANIED BY THE REQUIRED ALGORITHM DOCUMENTATION AND DATA USERS GUIDE. THE ADDITIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF AN EXPERIMENTAL VIIRS 375 M ACTIVE FIRE ALGORITHM GREATLY EXPANDED DATA USAGE WHILE FOSTERING NEW APPLICATIONS. THE IMPROVED SPATIAL RESOLUTION OF THE 375 M ACTIVE FIRE PRODUCT HAS DEMONSTRATED POTENTIAL FOR EARLY DETECTION OF SMALL FIRES AS WELL AS FOR ENHANCED REPRESENTATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF LARGE FIRES. FOR THIS NEW FUNDING CYCLE WE PROPOSE TO FURTHER ADVANCE THE DEVELOPMENT AND REFINEMENT OF THE VIIRS ACTIVE FIRE PRODUCT SUITE. PRIORITY AREAS FOR INVESTIGATION INCLUDE: (I) 375 M AND 750 M ACTIVE FIRE ALGORITHM CUSTOMIZATION IN RESPONSE TO NEW L1B INPUT DATA DERIVED FROM THE VIIRS INSTRUMENT ONBOARD THE CURRENT S-NPP AND THE UPCOMING JPSS SATELLITES (II) IMPLEMENTATION OF ATMOSPHERIC CORRECTION PROCEDURES AIMED TO IMPROVE ACCURACY AND UNCERTAINTY ANALYSIS OF SUB-PIXEL FIRE CHARACTERIZATION (FIRE RADIATIVE POWER [FRP]) RETRIEVALS (III) EXPANDING EOS-JPSS FIRE DATA CONTINUITY ANALYSES (IV) DESIGN TESTING AND IMPLEMENTATION OF EOS-EQUIVALENT LEVEL 3 (TILED) AND LEVEL 4 (GRIDDED) PRODUCTS (V) SUPPORT FOR NASA'S LAND ATMOSPHERE NEAR REAL-TIME CAPABILITY FOR EOS (LANCE) AND DIRECT READOUT LABORATORY DATA PROCESSING OPTIONS AND (VI) SUPPORT FOR VIIRS ACTIVE FIRE DATA RE-PROCESSING AND ARCHIVAL AT THE LPDAAC. DATA VALIDATION WILL BE PERFORMED USING AVAILABLE QUALITY REFERENCE DATA GUIDING FURTHER ALGORITHM DEVELOPMENT AND REFINEMENT WHILE BUILDING ON SIMILAR PROTOCOLS AND ACCURACY METRICS DEVELOPED FOR THE EOS ACTIVE FIRE DATA RECORD.
