THE PROPOSED WORK WILL USE DATA FROM THE NASA'S HSO MISSION SDO TOGETHER WITH MHD SIMULATIONS TO INVESTIGATE THE LINK BETWEEN CURRENT-DISTRIBUTION MAGNETIC SHEAR AND ERUPTIVE ACTIVITY IN ARS. IT IS HIGHLY RELEVANT TO THE SDO MISSION SCIENCE OBJECTIVES "5. WHAT MAGNETIC FIELD CONFIGURATIONS LEAD TO THE CMES FILAMENT ERUPTIONS AND FLARES THAT PRODUCE ENERGETIC PARTICLES AND RADIATION?" AND "7. WHEN WILL ACTIVITY OCCUR AND IS IT POSSIBLE TO MAKE ACCURATE AND RELIABLE FORECASTS OF SPACE WEATHER AND CLIMATE?" IT IS ALSO RELEVANT TO ONE OF THE HELIOPHYSICS DECADAL SURVEY SCIENCE GOALS "1. DETERMINE THE ORIGINS OF THE SUN'S ACTIVITY AND PREDICT THE VARIATIONS IN THE SPACE ENVIRONMENT."
