THE GOAL OF OUR COLLABORATION IS FOR RESEARCHERS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN MADISON TO WORK WITH THE GLOBAL PRECIPITATION MEASUREMENT (GPM) MISSION GROUND VALIDATION TEAM SPECIFICALLY DR. LARRY BLIVEN TO TRANSFER KNOWLEDGE OF THE PARTICLE IMAGING PACKAGE (PIP) INSTRUMENTATION AND SOFTWARE AND TO SUPPORT THE USE AND APPLICATION OF THE INSTRUMENT. DR. CLAIRE PETTERSEN HAS EXTENSIVE INVOLVEMENT DEPLOYING AND MAINTAINING THE PIP INSTRUMENT. SINCE 2014 DR. PETTERSEN HAS DEPLOYED PIPS AND GATHERED DATA AT REMOTE SITES IN MARQUETTE MICHIGAN (PETTERSEN ET AL. IN PREP) HAUKELISETER NORWAY AND KIRUNA SWEDEN. DR. PETTERSEN HAS FAMILIARITY USING PIP DATA PRODUCTS FROM WORKING WITH THESE REMOTE SITES AS WELL AS FROM PRIOR GPM GROUND CAMPAIGNS (GCPEX AND LPVEX). DR. NORM WOOD IS A SPECIALIST IN SNOW REMOTE SENSING AND MICROPHYSICAL PROPERTY ANALYSIS AND HAS SCIENTIFIC APPLICATION EXPERIENCE WITH THE PRECURSOR TO THE PIP (WOOD ET AL. 2013; WOOD ET AL. 2014). ADDITIONALLY DR. WOOD IS FAMILIAR WITH BOTH THE HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE USED FOR PIP DATA INGESTING AND PROCESSING AND WAS INVOLVED WITH DEPLOYING THE PIP IN NORWAY AND SWEDEN. THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN MADISON SPACE SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING CENTER (SSEC) HOUSES A WIDE VARIETY OF EARTH SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING EXPERTISE INCLUDING SOFTWARE ENGINEERS AND DATA ANALYSTS SPECIALIZING IN LABVIEW AND MATLAB PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES AS USED IN THE CURRENT PIP SOFTWARE. THE UNIQUE RESOURCES AVAILABLE AT SSEC COMBINED WITH DRS. PETTERSEN AND WOOD S KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE WITH THE PIP MAKE FOR AN IDEAL PLACE TO CULTIVATE THE EXPERTISE NEEDED TO TRANSFER THE PIP KNOWLEDGE AND DATA PROCESSING. AT THE END OF YEAR ONE DRS. PETTERSEN AND WOOD EXPECT TO HAVE THE CAPACITY TO ACT AS CONSULTANTS AND TECHNICAL SUPPORT RESOURCES FOR THOSE WITH PIPS IN THE FIELD AND AT NASA AND WILL BE POSITIONED TO PROVIDE APPLICATION KNOWLEDGE IN SUPPORT OF PLANNING FOR FUTURE FIELD PROJECTS
