THE MOD17 GLOBAL DAILY GROSS PRIMARY PRODUCTION ( ROUGHLY DAILY PLANT PHOTOSYNTHESIS) AND ANNUAL NET PRIMARY PRODUCTION ( VEGETATION NET GROWTH ) ARE THE ONLY DATA PRODUCTS ON THE TERRA AND AQUA PLATFORMS THAT COMPUTE A SPECIFIC CARBON FLUX PRODUCT FOR THE ENTIRE TERRESTRIAL BIOSPHERE. THESE PRODUCTS COMPUTED DAILY REPORTED EVERY 8-DAYS AND SUMMARIZED ANNUALLY SINCE 2000 ARE THE ONLY STANDARD DATASETS OF GPP AND NPP PRODUCED. NO OTHER COUNTRY PRODUCES A STANDARD GLOBAL 1KM DATASET FOR GPP OR OUR LAND EVAPOTRANSPIRATION PRODUCT MOD16ET. THE PRODUCTS SPECIFIC NOMENCLATURE FOR COLLECTION 6 8-DAY GPP IS MOD17A2H FROM TERRA MODIS AND MYD17A2H FROM AQUA MODIS. THE ANNUAL NPP IS MOD17A3. THIS MOD17 DATA IS USED TO INITIALIZE PARAMETERIZE AND OFTEN VALIDATE GLOBAL CLIMATE AND CARBON MODELS TO COMPUTE CO2 SOURCE/SINK DYNAMICS OF THE GLOBAL LAND SURFACE AND FOR COMPUTING VEGETATION GROWTH FOR FOOD FIBER AND BIOFUEL. MOD17 IS AN INPUT FOR SOME LANDCOVER DISTURBANCE ANALYSES BIODIVERSITY AND BIOENERGY ANALYSES. THE COMPANION HYDROLOGIC PRODUCT MOD16 EVAPOTRANSPIRATION USES VERY SIMILAR LOGIC AND NEAR IDENTICAL INPUTS TO MOD17 AS BOTH ARE BASED ON FUNDAMENTAL BIOPHYSICS AND PHYSIOLOGY OF LEAF GAS EXCHANGE. MOD16 IS USED FOR DROUGHT MONITORING AND HYDR'OLOGIC BALANCES OF WATERSHEDS AND REGIONS. I PROPOSE FOUR SPECIFIC COMPONENTS FOR THIS ALGORITHM MAINTENANCE ACTIVITY. 1 AS LEVEL 4 PRODUCTS BOTH MOD17GPP/NPP AND MOD16 ET INPUT DAILY METEOROLOGY FROM GMAO. EVERY TIME GMAO RELEASES A NEW MODEL VERSION CHANGING TEMPORAL/SPATIAL RESOLUTION AND/OR MAGNITUDES OF INPUT VARIABLES WE MUST CHECK AND USUALLY RECALIBRATE SOME OF OUR PARAMETERS. A LDEG CHANGE IN COMPUTED TEMPERATURE CAN GENERATE A 5-10% CHANGE IN DAILY PHOTOSYNTHESIS SO TO REACH CONSISTENCY OF A 15YEAR AND ONGOING CLIMATE DATA RECORD EACH GMAO CHANGE MUST BE INVESTIGATED AND USUALLY OUR BIOME PROPERTY LOOK-UP TABLE IS RECOMPUTED. 2 THE OTHER PRIMARY ISSUE WE MUST FOLLOW ARE CHANGES AND REDEFINITIONS IN THE LANDCOVER TYPES DEFINED BY MOD12QL WE USE AS INPUTS. WE HAVE A SPECIFIC ONGOING PROBLEM WITH DEFINING CROPLANDS CORRECTLY AND NEED TO DISTINGUISH BETWEEN C3 AND C4 CROPS FOR OUR BPLUT. 3 OUR CURRENT FORWARD PROCESSING ALGORITHM INGESTS DAILY MOD15 FPAR/LAI WHICH EVEN WITH 8-DAY COMPOSITING STILL RESULTS IN MANY CLOUD-CONTAMINATED PIXELS AND SPURIOUS COMPUTATION OF GPP AND ET. OUR SOLUTION SINCE LAUNCH IN 2000 HAS BEEN TO AT THE END OF EACH YEAR REPROCESS THE DAILY DATA WITH INTERPOLATION LOGIC TO FILL THESE CLOUDY PIXELS. THIS APPROACH IS COMPUTATIONALLY INEFFICIENT AND PRODUCES DIFFERENT THOUGH BETTER RESULTS THAN THE DAILY FORWARD PROCESSING THROUGH THE YEAR. A BETTER SOLUTION IS NOW POSSIBLE USING A SYR AVERAGE CLIMATOLOGY OF THE MOD15 VALUE FOR EACH PIXEL WHEN A CLEAR SKY COMPUTATION IS NOT POSSIBLE. MY COLLEAGUE JOHN KIMBALL AT NTSG HAS WRITTEN THIS ALGORITHM FOR HIS SMAP TCF CARBON MODEL AND WE SHOULD IMPLEMENT IT FOR MOD 16 AND 17 PROCESSING TO IMPROVE PROCESSING EFFICIENCY AND NOT REQUIRE THE END-OF-YEAR REPROCESSING. 4 THE OTHER PRIMARY ACTIVITIES I DO ARE WHAT CAN BE BROADLY CALLED INTERACTION WITH THE USER COMMUNITY. I FIND MANY HYDRO-ECOLOGICAL USERS HAVE NO REMOTE SENSING OR GEE-SPATIAL DATA SKILLS.
