THE SOLAR WIND MAGNETOSPHERE IONOSPHERE LINK EXPLORER OR SMILE IS A SMALL JOINT EUROPEANSPACE AGENCY (ESA) AND CHINESE ACADEMY OF SCIENCES (CAS) MISSION SCHEDULED FOR LAUNCH INEARLY 2021 FOLLOWING ITS CURRENT PHASE A STUDY WHICH ENDS IN EARLY 2018. THE MISSION (AND OURPROPOSAL) HAVE THREE GOALS/OBJECTIVES:(1) DETERMINE THE FUNDAMENTAL MODES FOR SOLAR WIND/MAGNETOSPHERE INTERACTION (2) DEFINE THE SUBSTORM CYCLE AND(3) DESCRIBE HOW CME DRIVEN STORMS ARISE AND DEFINE THEIR RELATIONSHIP TO SUBSTORMS.ON ITS HIGH APOGEE HIGH INCLINATION ORBIT SMILE CARRIES A BRITISH WIDE FIELD-OF-VIEW PATHFINDERTELESCOPE (SXI) TO IMAGE THE MAGNETOPAUSE AND CUSPS IN THE SOFT X-RAYS EMITTED WHEN HIGH CHARGESTATE SOLAR WIND IONS EXCHANGE CHARGES WITH EXOSPHERIC NEUTRALS A CANADIAN FAR ULTRAVIOLETTELESCOPE (FUV) TO IMAGE THE AURORAL OVAL A TOP-HAT ION SPECTROMETER AND A MAGNETOMETER. OURTEAM'S METHODOLOGY EMPLOYS:(1) THE IN SITU MEASUREMENTS TO MONITOR SOLAR WIND/MAGNETOSHEATH INPUT INTO THEMAGNETOSPHERE.(2) SXI TO TRACK DAYSIDE MAGNETOPAUSE AND CUSP MOTION DISTINGUISHING BETWEEN STEADY ORBURSTY EROSION ALONG PATCHY OR EXTENDED RECONNECTION LINES AT HIGH- (ANTIPARALLEL) OR LOW(COMPONENT) LATITUDES.(3) FUV TO DETERMINE THE FLUX OF OPEN POLAR CAP MAGNETIC FIELD LINES AND DISTINGUISH BETWEENMODELS IN WHICH TRANSPOLAR AURORAL STREAMERS TRIGGER SUBSTORM ONSET WHEN THEY REACH THENIGHTSIDE OVAL AND MODELS IN WHICH INSTABILITIES IN THE NEAR-EARTH MAGNETOTAIL GENERATEAURORAL BEADING WITH CHARACTERISTIC WAVELENGTHS JUST BEFORE SUBSTORM ONSET.( 4) SXI AND FUV TO DETERMINE THE RESPONSE OF THE DAY SIDE MAGNETOPAUSE TO THE MAGNETOTAILFLUX CLOSURE THAT OCCURS FOR BURSTY BULK FLOW STEADY EXTENDED AND SAWTOOTH RECONNECTIONLINES.(5) FUV AND THE SYMH INDEX TO DETERMINE WHETHER GREATER AMOUNTS OF OPEN FLUX ARE REQUIREDTO TRIGGER SUBSTORMS WHEN THE STORM- TIME RING CURRENT ENHANCES NORTHWARD MAGNETIC FIELDSWITHIN THE MAGNETOTAIL.(6) SXI SYMH AND ASYMH TO DETERMINE WHETHER ENHANCED RING CURRENT STRENGTHS PUSH THEMAGNETOPAUSE OUTWARD AND WHETHER THE PARTIAL RING CURRENT PREFERENTIALLY MOVES THE DUSKMAGNETOPAUSE OUTWARD. SEE HTTP://WWW.MSSL.UCL.AC.UK/SMILE/ AND OUR WHITE PAPERPOSTED AT HTTP://STORM.PLANETARY-MAG.NET/ FOR MORE OF OUR RESEARCH PLANS.AS CO-IS ON THE ORIGINAL PROPOSAL WE HAVE ALSO BEEN ASKED TO:(1) TEST SXI OPTICS TO DETERMINE EFFICIENCIES AND POINT SPREAD FUNCTIONS AT SUITABLE SOFT X-RAYENERGIES WITH AND WITHOUT VISIBLE AND EUV FILTERS (2) TEST SXI OPTICS FOR STRAY LIGHT TRANSMISSION AS A FUNCTION OF INCIDENT AND AZIMUTHAL ANGLE TOTHE PORES (3) EMPLOY GLOBAL MHD AND EXOSPHERIC NEUTRAL MODELS TO SIMULATE EXPECTED SOFT X-RAYEMISSIONS AND PLAN MISSION AND SOFT X-RAY OPERATIONS ( 4) HELP DEVELOP SXI DATA PROCESSING SOFTWARE (5) COORDINATE SCIENCE OPERATIONS AND GROUND OBSERVATORIES ( 6) DEVELOP INNOVATIVE DATA ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES TO EXTRACT MAGNETOPAUSE AND CUSP POSITIONSFROM THE OBSERVATIONS AND(7) ARCHIVE ALL MISSION DATA SETS WHERE THEY CAN BE COMPARED WITH OBSERVATIONS FROM OTHERMISSIONS. WE THEREFORE NEGOTIATED THE DELIVERY OF ALL SMILE DATA PRODUCTS AND OUR OWNSIMULATION OUTPUT TO NASA GSFC'S SPDF FROM WHENCE THEY WILL BE PROMPTLY DISTRIBUTEDVIA CDAWEB. OUR ACTIONS WILL ADD VALUE TO THE SMILE MISSION AND ENSURE THAT THE ENTIREU.S. COMMUNITY BENEFITS FROM ACCESS TO HIGHLY VALUED CORRELATIVE DATA SETS.GIVEN ITS FOCUS ON THE SOLAR WIND-MAGNETOSPHERE INTERACTION AND THE FUNDAMENTAL NATURE OFMAGNETOPAUSE AND MAGNETOTAIL RECONNECTION SMILE IS RELEVANT TO BOTH DECADAL SURVEY GOAL 2(DETERMINE THE DYNAMICS AND COUPLING OF EARTH'S MAGNETOSPHERE IONOSPHERE AND ATMOSPHERE ANDTHEIR RESPONSE TO SOLAR AND TERRESTRIAL INPUT) AND DECADAL SURVEY GOAL 4 (DISCOVER AND CHARACTERIZE
