IN COMETARY ACTIVITY GAS AND DUST ARE NOT TYPICALLY STUDIED AS A GLOBAL OUTFLOW THE REASON BEING THAT IN THE SPATIAL SCALES AT WHICH COMETS ARE MOST OFTEN OBSERVED THE GAS AND DUST ARE DECOUPLED. IN OUR PROJECT WE HAVE A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO STUDY THE ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH DUST AND GAS IS STILL COEVOLVING -- THE INNER COMA ENVIRONMENT. COMETS C/1996 B2 HYAKUTAKE 41P/TUTTLE- GIACOBINI-KRESAK (41P/TGK) 45P/HONDA-MRKOS-PAJDUSAKOVA (45P/HMP) AND 46P/WIRTANEN WERE ALL OBSERVED AT GEOCENTRIC DISTANCES BETWEEN 0.08 AND 0.15 AU WHICH ALLOWS FOR A DETAILED STUDY OF INNER COMA REGIONS. WE HAVE OBTAINED OPTICAL INFRARED AND RADAR DATA FOR THE FIRST THREE COMETS (IN 1996 FOR HYAKUTAKE AND IN SPRING 2017 FOR 45P/HMP AND 41P/TGK) AND PLAN TO OBTAIN SIMILAR DATA FOR 46P/WIRTANEN (IN FALL 2018). ADDITIONALLY THESE FOUR COMETS ARE DIVERSE IN TERMS OF DYNAMICAL CLASS (HYAKUTAKE IS A LONG PERIOD COMET WHILE 41P/TGK 45P/HMP AND 46P/WIRTANEN ARE JUPITER FAMILY COMETS) COMPOSITION (CARBON TYPICAL VS. CARBON DEPLETED) AND OVERALL ACTIVITY (41P/TGK IS WEAKLY ACTIVE; 46P/WIRTANEN IS HYPERACTIVE; WHILE HYAKUTAKE IS FRAGMENTING). ADDITIONALLY THESE FOUR COMETS HAVE A HIGHLY DIVERSE ACTIVITY PATTERNS IN BOTH THE DUST AND GAS WHICH CAN ALREADY BE SEEN FROM IMAGES OF HYAKUTAKE 41P/TGK AND 45P/HMP. THE PROJECT WE PROPOSE WILL USE THIS UNIQUE DATA SET TO SHOW INNER COMA DUST AND GAS INTERACTIONS WHERE THE SPATIAL SCALES ALLOWS US TO SEE THE REGIME WHERE THE DUST IS STILL BEING ACCELERATED BY THE GAS WHERE ASYMMETRIES CAUSED BY JET FEATURES AND DAY TO NIGHT VARIABILITIES CAN BE OBSERVED WHERE GAS PRODUCTION CAUSED BY SUBLIMATING DUST GRAINS CAN BE IDENTIFIED AND ESPECIALLY WHERE THE DUST AND GAS OUTFLOW IS STILL COUPLED. UNDERSTANDING THE UNDERLYING SPATIAL STRUCTURE THE RADIAL DISTRIBUTION AND THE PRODUCTION ENVIRONMENT VISIBLE IN THESE CLOSE APPROACHES ALLOWS US TO FURTHER CONSTRAIN HOW THE INNER COMA DUST AND GAS COUPLING AFFECTS THE BROADER COMA ENVIRONMENT MOST OFTEN STUDIED
