COMETS CARRY THE MOST PRIMITIVE AND VOLATILE RICH MATERIALS IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM. AS THEY APPROACH THE INNER SOLAR SYSTEM THEY START TO LOSE MASS DUE TO SUBLIMATION AND FRAGMENTATION. RECENT OBSERVATIONS SUGGEST THAT COMETARY FRAGMENTATION MAY PLAY A LEADING ROLE IN THE EVENTUAL DESTRUCTION OF A COMET. A COMET THAT IS DESTROYED BY FRAGMENTATION WILL HAVE A SHORTER LIFETIME THAN A COMET LOSING MASS SOLELY BY SUBLIMATION DURING PERIHELION PASSAGES. IN A STEADY STATE THE RATE OF COMETS SUPPLIED BY THE KUIPER BELT AND OORT CLOUD SHOULD BE EQUIVALENT TO THE RATE OF DESTRUCTION. IF THE LIFETIMES OF THE COMETS ARE SHORT THE SUPPLY WOULD WOULD NEED TO BE LARGE ENOUGH TO COMPENSATE. THEREFORE IT IS CRUCIAL TO ESTIMATE THE FRAGMENTATION RATE OF COMETS IN ORDER TO ASSESS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF FRAGMENTATION ON THEIR LIFETIMES. THE FRAGMENTATIONS MECHANISMS ARE ALSO POORLY UNDERSTOOD. WE AIM TO DO THIS THROUGH A LARGE SURVEY USING ARCHIVAL DATA FROM THE CADC AS WELL AS FOLLOW-UP OBSERVATIONS USING GROUND BASED TELESCOPES. POTENTIAL MECHANISMS INCLUDE TIDAL ROTATIONAL THERMAL OUTGASSING PRESSURE IMPACT-INDUCED FRAGMENTATION OR A COMBINATION OF THESE. IN ORDER TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE FRAGMENTATION MECHANISM WE WILL ALSO ANALYZE THE DYNAMICS OF THE FRAGMENTED COMETS FOUND IN THE SURVEY. THERE ARE NO CURRENT SURVEYS THAT HAS DETERMINED ACCURATE RATES SEPARATELY FOR BOTH LONG AND SHORT PERIOD COMETS. CURRENTLY THERE IS ALSO NO STUDY THAT HAS DETERMINED WHETHER THERE IS A CLEAR DIFFERENCE IN THE FRAGMENTATION MECHANISMS THAT AFFECT LONG AND SHORT PERIOD COMETS. WE WILL CONDUCT THESE ANALYSIS FOR COMETS IN GENERAL AS WELL AS FOR LONG AND SHORT PERIOD COMETS SEPARATELY TO COMPARE SPLITTING RATES AND MECHANISMS BETWEEN THE TWO POPULATIONS
