THIS PROPOSAL WILL USE DATA FROM AIRBORNE IMAGING SPECTROMETERS OVER THE METROPOLITAN AREAS OF SANTA BARBARA AND LOS ANGELES ACQUIRED DURING THE RECENT 2012-2016 CALIFORNIA DROUGHT. THE PRIMARY GOALS IN THIS WORK ARE TO QUANTIFY HOW THE DROUGHT AFFECTED VEGETATION ACROSS URBAN LANDSCAPES AND TO ASSESS THE CAPABILITIES OF IMAGING SPECTROMETERS TO RETRIEVE VEGETATION HEALTH AND CONDITION CHARACTERISTICS THROUGH TIME IN URBAN REGIONS. URBAN AREAS ARE HETEROGENEOUS SURFACES IN THAT THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF LAND COVER TYPES (E.G. TREES PAVEMENTS BUILDING ROOFS ETC.) PRESENT WITHIN SHORT DISTANCE OF EACH OTHER; THIS MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO ACQUIRE DATA ABOUT A PARTICULAR SURFACE WITHIN LARGE REMOTE SENSING IMAGE PIXELS SINCE THE PIXELS CONTAIN MANY OF THESE SURFACES AT ONCE. THIS STUDY WILL USE DATA AT VARIOUS SPATIAL RESOLUTIONS (I.E. PIXEL SIZES) FROM THE AIRBORNE VISIBLE INFRARED IMAGING SPECTROMETER (AVIRIS) AND AVIRIS-NEXT GENERATION (AVIRIS-NG) IN ORDER TO CLASSIFY VEGETATION TYPES AND TRACK CHANGES IN CANOPY CONDITION THROUGH THE DROUGHT
