HE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO THE QUANTITIVELY EVALUATE THE POTENTIAL OF THE RADIOMETER ASSESSMENT USING VERTICALLY ALIGNED NANOTUBES (RAVAN) CUBESAT FOR MAKING SCIENCE-QUALITY MEASUREMENTS OF THE EARTH RADIATION BUDGET (ERB). THE EARTH SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY OFFICE--FUNDED RAVAN CUBESAT PROJECT BUILT FLEW AND PROVED TWO TECHNOLOGIES (CARBON NANOTUBE RADIOMETERS AND GALLIUM PHASECHANGE CELLS) FOR ERB MEASUREMENTS. THIS PROPOSAL CONTINUES WHERE THE TECHNOLOGY DEMONSTRATION ENDS WITH THE TEST AND EVALUATION OF RAVAN-TYPE SMALLSAT MEASUREMENTS FOR PERFORMING ERB SCIENCE. THIS IS PARTICULARLY RELEVANT GIVEN THE RECENT CANCELLATION OF THE RADIATION BUDGET INSTRUMENT (RBI) SLATED TO FLY ON THE JOINT POLAR SATELLITE SYSTEM (JPSS)-2. THE PRINCIPAL OBJECTIVES ARE TO:1) EVALUATE THE ABSOLUTE ACCURACY OF RAVAN EARTH OUTGOING RADIATION MEASUREMENTS 2) DETERMINE WHERE RAVAN WEAKNESSES/LIMITATIONS LIE AND IDENTIFY WHAT WOULD HAVE TO BE CHANGED IN RAVAN'S PERFORMANCE TO BETTER MEET SCIENCE MEASUREMENT NEEDS GOING FORWARD INCLUDING GAP MITIGATION FOR CERES AND/OR AS A PART OF THE SOLUTION IN A POST- CERES/RBI WORLD AND 3) ESTABLISH A RETRIEVAL OF SPATIAL INFORMATION FROM WFOV NONSCANNER MEASUREMENTS. OUR PROPOSED ANALYSIS WORKS TOWARD THE ULTIMATE GOAL OF A SUSTAINABLE SCIENCE MEASUREMENT OF ERB. THE ANALYSIS BUILDS ON THE SUCCESSFUL RAVAN CUBESAT TECHNOLOGY DEMONSTRATION FUNDED THROUGH ESTO IN-SPACE VALIDATION OF EARTH SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY (INVEST)-2012. BROADBAND NONSCANNER OBSERVATIONS FROM A RAVAN-LIKE PLATFORM OR ITS UNDERLYING TECHNOLOGIES MAY BE A PART OF THE SOLUTION TO THE SUSTAINABLE ERB CHALLENGE. IN ANY CASE A SCIENCE EVALUATION OF RAVAN WILL BE DIRECTLY RELEVANT TO POTENTIAL EV-C CONCEPTS AND LONGER-TERM ERB FORMULATIONS.
