THIS PROPOSAL WILL OUTLINE THE CASE FOR THE PI SCOTT D. KING TO JOIN THE INSIGHT MISSION TEAM THROUGH THE PARTICIPATING SCIENCE PROGRAM. DESCRIPTION OF THE KEY CENTRAL OBJECTIVES OF THE PROPOSAL: THE KEY CENTRAL OBJECTIVE OF THE PROPOSAL IS TO UNDERSTAND THE PRESENT-DAY COMPOSITION OF MARTIAN MANTLE USING THE ANTICIPATED SEISMIC AND THERMAL RESULTS FROM THE INSIGHT MISSION AND COMPARE THE RESULTING COMPOSITION WITH THE COMPOSITIONS OF THE OTHER TERRESTRIAL PLANETS. THERE ARE FIVE SPECIFIC TASKS PROPOSED TO ACCOMPLISH THIS OBJECTIVE: 1) ESTIMATE THE MANTLE AND CRUSTAL TEMPERATURE FIELDS; 2) DEVELOP A MODEL OF THE DENSITY AS A FUNCTION OF PRESSURE THROUGHOUT THE MARTIAN INTERIOR; 3) DEVELOP A MODEL OF THE ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY STRUCTURE THROUGHOUT THE MARTIAN INTERIOR; 4) COMPARE THE RESULTS FROM TASKS 1-3 WITH THE PLANETARY STRUCTURES OF EARTH MOON VENUS AND MERCURY; 5) DEVELOP A MODEL OF THE SEISMIC ATTENUATION OF MARS. THE METHODS/TECHNIQUES PROPOSED TO ACCOMPLISH THE STATED RESEARCH OBJECTIVES: IN THE FULL PROPOSAL I WILL OUTLINE THE METHODS/TECHNIQUES PROPOSED TO ACCOMPLISH THE STATED RESEARCH OBJECTIVES. HERE I PROVIDE A CONCISE OVERVIEW: 1.MODELING OF THE MANTLE AND CRUSTAL TEMPERATURE FIELDS AND THERMAL PROPERTIES (DESIRED AREA 5C IN THE NRA). THIS WILL BE ACCOMPLISHED USING THE OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE CITCOMS AND WILL SPECIFICALLY FOCUS ON TWO ASPECTS A) THE DISTRIBUTION OF RADIOGENIC ELEMENTS THROUGH THE CRUST AND MANTLE AND 2) THE POSSIBLE ROLE OF PARTIAL MELT ON THE SUB LITHOSPHERIC MANTLE. DEFINING A RANGE OF CANDIDATE MARTIAN ADIABATIC TEMPERATURE PROFILES WILL BE KEY FOR INVESTIGATIONS 2 AND 3 BELOW. 2.HIGH-PRESSURE MINERALOGY/EQUATIONS OF STATE FOR MARS (DESIRED AREA 8A IN THE NRA). THIS INVESTIGATION WILL BE UNDERTAKEN USING THE PERPL_X AND BURNMAN SOFTWARE COMPARING CANDIDATE MARTIAN MANTLE COMPOSITIONS WITH THE SEISMIC PROFILES DEVELOPED FROM THE SEISMIC RESULTS FROM INSIGHT AND THE ADIABATIC TEMPERATURE PROFILES FROM INVESTIGATION 1. 3. STUDIES OF ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY STRUCTURE OF THE MARTIAN CRUST AND MANTLE (DESIRED AREA 4B IN THE NRA). THIS STUDY COMPLEMENTS INVESTIGATIONS 1 AND 2 REQUIRING CRUST/MANTLE COMPOSITIONS AND ADIABATIC TEMPERATURE PROFILES. IT WILL USE THE COMPOSITIONAL AND ADIABATIC TEMPERATURE PROFILES ALONG WITH A DATABASE OF ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY DATA. 4. COMPARATIVE STUDIES OF PLANETARY STRUCTURE WITH THOSE OF EARTH MOON VENUS AND MERCURY (DESIRED AREA 8E IN THE NRA). ARMED WITH THE RESULTS FROM INVESTIGATIONS 1 2 AND 3 I WILL THEN COMPARE THE ADIABATIC TEMPERATURE PROFILES EQUATIONS OF STATE AND ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY PROFILES WITH RESULTS FROM EARTH THE MOON AND MERCURY. WHILE THE OBSERVATIONS FROM VENUS ARE FAR FROM CONSTRAINED IT WILL BE INTERESTING TO COMPARE MARS AND VENUS AS BOTH ARE IN THE STAGNANT-LID MODE OF CONVECTION. 5. SEISMIC ATTENUATION ANALYSIS. I FIND IT SURPRISING THAT SEISMIC ATTENUATION IS NOT LISTED AS A DESIRED RESEARCH AREA SEISMIC BECAUSE ATTENUATION WOULD PLACE CONSTRAINS THE DEGREE TO WHICH PARTIAL MELT (OR WATER) EXISTS BENEATH THE MARTIAN LITHOSPHERE. THIS WILL PROVIDE AN IMPORTANT CONSTRAINT ON THE ADIABATIC TEMPERATURE PROFILE. I LIST THIS LAST BECAUSE I SUSPECT THAT THE EXPERTISE ON THE MISSION TEAM EXISTS ALREADY AND I SOMEHOW MISSED IT. HOWEVER I CONSIDER THIS TO BE A VERY IMPORTANT CONSTRAINT AND FEEL IT IS IMPORTANT TO MENTION IN THE PROPOSAL. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROPOSED WORK TO THE OBJECTIVES OF THE SOLICITATION AND TO NASA INTERESTS AND PROGRAMS IN GENERAL: THE ALIGNMENT OF FOUR OF THE FIVE PROPOSED RESEARCH TASKS DEMONSTRATES THE SIGNIFICANCE OF WORK TO THE OBJECTIVES OF THE SOLICITATION. THE WORK PROPOSED HERE IS NECESSARY TO INTERPRET THE RESULTS OF THE INSIGHT MISSION AND IS THUS RELEVANT TO THE MISSION. RELEVANCE TO THE ENHANCEMENT OF THE RESULTS OF THE INSIGHT MISSION DEMONSTRATES THE RELEVANCE OF THE PROPOSAL TO NASA.
