SCIENCE OBJECTIVES THIS INVESTIGATION SEEKS TO UNDERSTAND THE ELECTRODYNAMIC DYNAMO THAT IS SET UP IN THE DAYSIDE MID-LATITUDE IONOSPHERE AS A RESULT OF THE INTERACTION OF THERMOSPHERIC WINDS WITH THE IONOSPHERE. A COMPREHENSIVE SET OF MEASUREMENTS CARRIED BY A TRIO OF SOUNDING ROCKETS WILL EXAMINE THE ROLES OF ION-NEUTRAL COUPLING WIND SHEAR AND ELECTRODYNAMICS IN THIS PHENOMENON. THE UNH-SUPPLIED INSTRUMENTATION WILL CONTRIBUTE MEASUREMENTS OF THE WINDS NEUTRAL TEMPERATURE TURBULENCE AND ION COMPOSITION PROFILES. THESE MEASUREMENTS WILL BE COMBINED WITH THE OTHER ROCKET MEASUREMENTS AND THE GROUND-BASED MEASUREMENTS TO GIVE NEW INSIGHTS INTO THESE INTENSE IRREGULARITIES.
