THE LEAD FOR THE U.S. AMSR SCIENCE TEAM WILL TRANSITION FROM DR. ROY SPENCER (UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA IN HUNTSVILLE EARTH SCIENCE SYSTEM CENTER) TO DR. CHRISTIAN KUMMEROW PROFESSOR DEPARTMENT OF ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCE AND DIRECTOR OF THE COOPERATIVE INSTITUTE FOR RESEARCH IN THE ATMOSPHERE (CIRA) AT COLORADO STATE UNIVERSITY. HE HAS EXPERIENCE LEADING OTHER NASA TEAMS AND IS FAMILIAR WITH THE TEAM LEAD SCIENCE AND COMPUTING FACILITY (TLSCF) AS WELL AS THE SCIENCE INVESTIGATOR?LED PROCESSING SYSTEM (SIPS) HAVING WORKED WITH THEM FOR OVER 10 YEARS AND SERVING ON THE EXTERNAL REVIEW BOARD FOR THE GLOBAL HYDROLOGY RESEARCH CENTER AT THE MARSHALL SPACE FLIGHT CENTER. DR. KUMMEROW WILL CONTINUE TO PROVIDE THE PRECIPITATION ALGORITHM WHILE MR. RALPH FERRARO (CHIEF SATELLITE CLIMATE STUDIES BRANCH NOAA/NESDIS) WILL FOCUS ON PRECIPITATION OVER LAND. DR. KUMMEROW WILL ALSO PROVIDE THE OCEAN ALGORITHM WHICH PROVIDES THREE ATMOSPHERIC PARAMETERS OVER THE OCEAN: COLUMNAR WATER VAPOR CONTENT (CWV) LIQUID WATER PATH (LWP) AND WIND SPEED (WS). DR. THORSTEN MARKUS (GSFC) WILL CONTINUE TO PROVIDE THE GLOBAL SEA ICE ALGORITHMS PROVIDING SEA ICE CONCENTRATION SNOW DEPTH ON SEA ICE AND SEA ICE DRIFT (SOMETIMES CALLED MOTION ). DR. MARCO TEDESCO (ASSISTANT PROFESSOR AT LAMONT?DOHERTY EARTH OBSERVATORY OF COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY NY) HAS DEVELOPED A NEW OPERATIONAL SNOW ALGORITHM: THIS ALGORITHM MAKES USE OF CLIMATOLOGICAL DATA ELECTROMAGNETIC MODELING AND ARTIFICIAL NEURAL NETWORKS. THE SOIL MOISTURE ALGORITHM WILL BE PROVIDED BY DR. THOMAS JACKSON (HYDROLOGIST USDA/ARS HYDROLOGY AND REMOTE SENSING LAB) AND DR. RAJAT BINDLISH (GSFC) WHICH IS THE SINGLE CHANNEL ALGORITHM (SCA) SOIL MOISTURE ALGORITHM. MS. DAWN CONWAY WILL CONTINUE TO OVERSEE THE TEAM LEAD SCIENCE COMPUTING FACILITY (TLSCF). SHE WILL BE THE MAIN CONTACT IF ALGORITHM ISSUES ARISE DURING THE CONTINUED ALGORITHM PROCESSING PHASE FOR THE PERIOD COVERED BY THIS PROPOSAL. SHE WILL CONTINUE TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR BROWSE IMAGES METADATA CONTENT AND UPDATES TO PRODUCT DOCUMENTATION. THE AMSR SCIENCE INVESTIGATOR?LED PROCESSING SYSTEM (SIPS) WILL CONTINUE TO PROCESS THE AMSR DATA WITH THE ALGORITHMS PROVIDED BY THE TLSCF. THE DATA ARCHIVE WILL CONTINUE TO BE AT THE NATIONAL SNOW AND ICE DATA CENTER (NSIDC). BOTH OF THESE ACTIVITIES ARE PART OF THEIR CONTINUING MANDATE FOR PRODUCT GENERATION AND ARE FUNDED SEPARATELY. AN ELECTRONIC YEARLY PROGRESS REPORT WILL BE DELIVERED TO THE TEAM LEAD AT EACH ANNIVERSARY OF THE START OF PROGRAM. THIS REPORT WILL BE SENT TO THE NASA GRANTS OFFICE AS WELL AS THE AQUA PROGRAM AND PROJECT SCIENTISTS.
