WE PROPOSE TO USE SWIFT-UVOT TO MEASURE ROTATIONAL VARIATIONS OF THE GAS AND DUST SURROUNDING COMET 46P/WIRTANEN. WE WILL DERIVE THE ROTATIONAL PERIOD OF THE NUCLEUS FROM CONTINUUM OBSERVATIONS AND WILL LOOK FOR EVIDENCE OF ROTATIONAL CHEMICAL VARIABILITY IN THE PRODUCTION RATES OF OH CN C2 AND OTHER VOLATILES. WE WILL COMPARE THE ROTATION AND CHEMICAL VARIABILITY BEFORE AND AFTER THE COMET'S APPROACH TO THE SUN TO MEASURE CHANGES IN THE ROTATION PERIOD CAUSED BY GAS JETS. THIS ALLOWS US TO EVALUATE THE CHEMICAL HETEROGENEITY OF THE NUCLEUS AND HOW COMETS EVOLVE THROUGH THEIR ACTIVITY. THE SWIFT OBSERVATIONS WILL PROVIDE CRITICAL CONTEXT TO THE ANTICIPATED WORLD-WIDE OBSERVING CAMPAIGN OF THIS CLOSE-APPROACH COMET.
