THE STUDY OF N2-CO-CH4 VOLATILE ICE TODAY CAN LEAD INSIGHT INTO GEOLOGICAL PROCESSES ON THE SURFACE OF PLUTO. STUDYING THE STABILITY OF THESE ICES WITH TIME AS WELL THE CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL PROCESSING THAT AFFECT GAS COMPOSITION AND ICE PHASE CHANGES MAY HAVE IMPLICATIONS ON HOW THE SURFACE OF PLUTO BEHAVES SEASONALLY AND HAS EVOLVED OVER TIME. THEREFORE THE OBJECTIVE OF OUR PROPOSED RESEARCH IS TO DETERMINE THE ICE PHASES CONDENSING FROM VOLATILE MIXTURES AT TEMPERATURES AND PRESSURES COMPARABLE TO PLUTOS SURFACE (50 K AND LOWER AROUND 14BAR) AND CHARACTERIZE THEIR STABILITY AND BEHAVIOR USING RAMAN AND INFRARED SPECTROSCOPY. THE PROPOSED COMBINED STUDIES WILL ALLOW US TO ADDRESS THE FOLLOWING FUNDAMENTAL QUESTIONS. 1) WHAT ARE THE STABILITY RANGES OF ICES FORMED FROM DIFFERENT RATIOS OF GASES? 2) WHAT ICES MIXTURES CAN WE RETROACTIVELY PREDICT FOR CURRENTLY OBSERVED VOLATILE RATIOS ON PLUTO USING THE NEW HORIZONS MISSION DATA? 3) WHAT ARE THE SEASONAL CHANGES RELATED TO ICES SUBLIMATION AND THEIR IMPLICATIONS FOR THE GEOLOGICAL FORMATIONS FOUND ON THE SURFACE OF PLUTO?
