THE UAH RO3QET LIDAR HAS BEEN PROVIDING TROPOSPHERIC OZONE PROFILES SINCE 2008 FOR VARIOUS SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATIONS SUCH AS LOW?LEVEL OZONE TRANSPORT STRATOSPHERE?TROPOSPHERE INTERACTION MODEL EVALUATION CHEMICAL PRODUCTION IN BIOMASS BURNING SMOKE TRANSPORT AND LIGHTNING INDUCED NOX. IN THE PAST FEW YEARS WE HAVE IMPROVED LIDAR MEASUREMENT ACCURACY FOSTERED LIDAR DATA USAGE AND COORDINATED THE COLLABORATION BETWEEN THE STATIONS TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE TOLNET WHICH HAS MATURED INTO AN INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNIZED GROUP OF SIX NORTH AMERICAN OZONE LIDARS. RECENTLY WE ARE ACTIVELY TAKING LIDAR DATA FOR TROPOMI VALIDATION TO PREPARE FOR THE FUTURE TEMPO VALIDATION MISSION. IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS WE PROPOSE TO 1) CONTINUE THE ROUTINE LIDAR OBSERVATION AND STANDARD DATA ARCHIVING TO SUPPORT NASA S MISSION PRIMARILY TEMPO VALIDATION 2) CONTINUE CONDUCTING SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH USING LIDAR DATA (E.G. OZONE PRODUCTION IN SEUS FIRE SMOKE) 3) FINISH CONSTRUCTION OF THE MOBILE LIDAR AND SCANNING SYSTEM TO SUPPORT FUTURE FIELD CAMPAIGNS UNDER NASA S GUIDANCE AND 4) FURTHER ENHANCE THE COLLABORATION BETWEEN TOLNET AND MODELING/SATELLITE COMMUNITY. THE AIR?QUALITY AND ATMOSPHERIC CHEMISTRY COMMUNITIES HAVE A LONG LEGACY OF USING SPACE BASED OBSERVATIONS TO OBSERVE DAY?TO?DAY AND YEAR?TO?YEAR CHANGES IN ATMOSPHERIC CONSTITUENTS. HOWEVER THEY HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO CAPTURE THE DIURNAL VARIABILITY OF POLLUTION WITH ENOUGH TEMPORAL OR SPATIAL FIDELITY AND A LOW ENOUGH LATENCY FOR REGULAR USE BY OPERATIONAL DECISION MAKERS. THE OZONE PROFILING MEASUREMENTS RESULTING FROM THIS PROPOSAL WILL FILL THE UPPER?AIR GAP BETWEEN THE SURFACE MONITORING NETWORK AND GLOBAL SATELLITE OBSERVATIONS TO SUPPORT AIR?QUALITY RESEARCH AND DECISION MAKING. IN ADDITION OZONE PROFILES WITH HIGH?TEMPORAL RESOLUTION WILL ADDRESS CRITICAL QUESTIONS SUCH AS THE TEMPO RETRIEVAL UNCERTAINTY AND CAPTURED VARIANCE ESPECIALLY IN THE PBL.
