OBJECTIVE 1. DETERMINE HARDNESS/COMPRESSIVE RESPONSE OF SOLID (S) SN2. WSU RESEARCHERS IN COLLABORATION WITH UI RESEARCHERS WILL REPURPOSE AN EXISTING CRYOSTAT (SHOWN IN FIGURE 1 BELOW) HOUSED IN THE HYPER LAB AT WSU TO MAKE COMPRESSIVE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES MEASUREMENT ON SOLID NITROGEN VIA FLAT PUNCH INDENTATION. HARDNESS/PENETRATION DATA WILL BE COLLECTED FOR BULK SN2 NEAR THE DUCTILE TO BRITTLE TRANSITION TEMPERATURE (DBTT) REPORTED IN THE LITERATURE (25 40 K). THE DATA WILL BE ANALYZED AND A PRELIMINARY REPORT TO NASA WILL BE PREPARED. OBJECTIVE 2. SIMULATE AND MEASURE DRILLING AND RAZOR SCRAPING RESPONSE OF SN2. WSU RESEARCHERS ASSISTED BY UI RESEARCHERS WILL DEVELOP A JIGGING FIXTURE TO BE MOUNTED TO THE CRYOSTAT FOR MEASURING THE TORQUE SPEED THRUST FORCE TEMPERATURE AND DISPLACEMENT OF DRILL AND RAZOR BLADE ATTACHMENTS AS THEY ARE DEPRESSED INTO THE SOLID NITROGEN. UI RESEARCHERS WILL THEN CONDUCT THE DRILL AND RAZOR PENETRATION EXPERIMENTS AT TEMPERATURES AROUND THE DBTT. UI RESEARCHERS WILL ANALYZE THIS DATA AND COMBINE IT WITH THE PRELIMINARY HARDNESS DATA. THIS COMBINED DATA WILL BE SYNTHESIZED INTO A FINAL REPORT. OBJECTIVE 3. DETERMINE THE EQUATION OF STATE (EOS) AND PROPERTIES OF NITROGEN. WSU RESEARCHERS WILL DETERMINE THESE OVER APPROXIMATELY 0.01 2 PA AND 25 40 K FOR BOTH THE SOLID AND VAPOR PHASES (INCLUDING SUPERHEATED AND SUPERCOOLED PHASES RESPECTIVELY). SIMULATIONS WILL BE USED TO LINK SEVERAL PROPERTIES INCLUDING INTERNAL ENERGY PRESSURE VOLUME (AND HENCE ENTHALPY AND DENSITY) HEAT CAPACITY AND COMPRESSIBILITY.
