DCOTSS PARTICIPATION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA (OU) WILL CONSIST OF A TEAM OF THREE INDIVIDUALS: INVESTIGATOR DR. CAMERON HOMEYER AND TWO PHD STUDENTS. DR. HOMEYER WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR MANAGING ALL EFFORTS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA AND IS ALSO SERVING AS THE SCIENCE INVESTIGATION MANAGER FOR THEORY FORECASTING AND FLIGHT PLANNING AND DATA MANAGER FOR THE DCOTSS MISSION. ALL MEMBERS OF THE OU TEAM WILL PARTICIPATE IN THE FIELD PROJECT AND WILL PROVIDE KEY GUIDANCE FOR THE SCIENCE OBJECTIVES OF THE MISSION AS WELL AS FORECASTING AND FLIGHT PLANNING SUPPORT. CRITICAL OPERATIONAL RADAR PRODUCTS (GRIDRAD) AND TRAJECTORY CALCULATIONS (FORECASTS OF THE LARGE-SCALE TRANSPORT OF CONVECTIVE OVERSHOOTS) TO SUPPORT THESE EFFORTS WILL BE PRODUCED AT OU. IN ADDITION TO PARTICIPATION IN THE FIELD PHASE OF THE DCOTSS PROJECT THE OU TEAM WILL ADDRESS SEVERAL SCIENCE QUESTIONS USING THE DATA COLLECTED DURING THE MISSION. THESE INCLUDE: WHAT IS THE ENVELOPE OF TRANSPORT OUTCOMES FROM TROPOPAUSE-PENETRATING CONVECTION IN THE UPPER TROPOSPHERE AND LOWER STRATOSPHERE (UTLS) IN TERMS OF ITS IMPACT ON THE COMPOSITION OF CHEMICALLY PASSIVE AND ACTIVE TRACE GASES? HOW DO THE TRANSPORT OUTCOMES DEPEND ON THE PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF STORMS (ORGANIZATION DISCRETE OR MULTI-CELL; DEPTH AND DURATION OF STRATOSPHERIC PENETRATION; DEVELOPMENT OF ABOVE-ANVIL CIRRUS PLUMES) THE TIME RELATIVE TO STORM OCCURRENCE AND THE ENVIRONMENTS IN WHICH THE STORMS OCCUR (INSTABILITY IN THE TROPOSPHERE; UTLS TEMPERATURE WINDS AND HUMIDITY)? HOW WELL DO CONVECTION-ALLOWING MODELS REPRODUCE THE OBSERVED ATMOSPHERIC COMPOSITION FOLLOWING A TROPOPAUSE-PENETRATING STORM? AND DOES MODEL PERFORMANCE DEPEND MORE ON ACCURATE CHEMISTRY OR ACCURATE METEOROLOGY (I.E. PLACING STORMS IN THE RIGHT LOCATIONS AT THE RIGHT TIMES)? QUESTIONS 1 AND 2 WILL LEVERAGE DATA FROM ALL OF THE COMPLETED RESEARCH FLIGHTS AND SERVE AS THE PRIMARY FOCUS OF ONE PHD STUDENT S RESEARCH ACTIVITIES WHILE QUESTIONS 3 AND 4 WILL LEVERAGE DATA FROM A FEW CASE STUDIES AND SERVE AS THE PRIMARY FOCUS OF THE REMAINING PHD STUDENT S RESEARCH. ALL EFFORTS WILL EMPLOY 5-MIN RADAR OBSERVATIONS USING GRIDRAD PRODUCTS WHICH WILL BE PRODUCED IN REAL TIME FOR THE MISSION AND POTENTIALLY REPRODUCED FOR RESEARCH PURPOSES AFTER THE FIELD CAMPAIGN. MODELING EFFORTS WILL EMPLOY THE WEATHER RESEARCH AND FORECASTING MODEL COUPLED WITH CHEMISTRY (WRF-CHEM).
