THIS PROPOSAL (ENTITLED CRYSTAL-TO-GLASS TRANSITIONS IN COLLOIDS (FLIGHT EXPERIMENT)) BUILDS ON AND CONTINUES RESEARCH STARTED IN THE FUNDED NASA PROPOSAL LOW VOLUME FRACTION ENTROPICALLY DRIVEN COLLOIDAL ASSEMBLY (PHASE 2) (I.E. L?CA (PHASE 2)) WHICH EVOLVED TO THE FUNDED PHASE 3 PROPOSAL IN 2013. THE PROPOSED WORK DERIVES FROM AN EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAM THAT WAS PEER-REVIEWED AND ACCEPTED FOR FLIGHT ON ISS AND THE INSTRUMENTATION AT THE HEART OF THE ORIGINAL FLIGHT PROPOSAL FOR ISS WAS PART OF THE LIGHT MICROSCOPY MODULE (LMM). THE SCIENCE CONCEPT REVIEW (SCR) FOR L?CA (PHASE 2) WAS HELD IN JUNE 2011 AND THE PROPOSED RESEARCH WAS STRONGLY ENDORSED BY THE EXTERNAL REVIEW PANEL IN THEIR REPORT; THESE SCIENCE GOALS AND EVOLVING EXPERIMENTAL PLANS WERE IMPLEMENTED IN L?CA (PHASE 3) AGAIN AFTER PEER REVIEW. NOW THE EXPERIMENTS BASED ON THIS WORK ARE ON THE VERGE FLYING. PROPOSED RESEARCH IN CRYSTAL-TO-GLASS TRANSITIONS IN COLLOIDS (FLIGHT EXPERIMENT) INTEGRATES INTO THE HARDWARE DEVELOPED FOR THE SPACE-FLIGHTS THAT ARE NAMED BY VARIANTS OF THE TERM ACE ; IN ADDITION RELATED MEASUREMENTS WERE CARRIED OUT IN THE BCAT-SERIES FLIGHT EXPERIMENTS. SINCE THE ORIGINAL L?CA PROPOSAL THE NASA BUDGET HAS FLUCTUATED AND SOFT MATTER SCIENCE HAS EVOLVED TOO. IN RESPONSE TO THESE DEVELOPMENTS THE PROPOSED INVESTIGATION IS LEANER AND THE SCIENCE AIMS ARE FOCUSED ON THE CRYSTAL-TO-GLASS TRANSITION TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF RECENT BREAKTHROUGHS IN THE FIELD MADE IN OUR LABORATORY AND BY OTHERS.
