THIS PROJECT SEEKS TO INFORM SCIENTIFIC DECISIONS TO FACILITATE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF CASCADIA HAZARDS DIRECTLY ADDRESSING NASA SCIENCE GOALS TO IMPROVE THE CAPABILITY TO ASSESS AND RESPOND TO NATURAL HAZARDS AND EXTREME EVENTS AND TO USE EARTH SYSTEM SCIENCE TO INFORM DECISIONS AND PROVIDE BENEFITS TO SOCIETY. THE PROPOSED RESEARCH IS WELL-ALIGNED WITH THE SOLICITATION IN THAT WE SEEK TO QUANTIFY THE VALUE OF EMERGING REMOTE SENSING TECHNOLOGIES AND EXPLORE TRADEOFFS BETWEEN ONSHORE GEODETIC OBSERVATIONS AND SEAFLOOR GEODETIC OBSERVATIONS. FOR EXAMPLE RELATIVE FINANCIAL COSTS OF SEAFLOOR GEODETIC TECHNOLOGY MAY BE COMPARED IN TERMS OF INFORMATION GAIN PER DOLLAR. PRELIMINARY WORK ON THIS PROJECT FOR A SINGLE SET OF MODEL ASSUMPTIONS SUGGESTS THAT A SINGLE SEAFLOOR OBSERVATION MAY PROVIDE 5-10 TIMES THE INFORMATION GAIN OF THE MOST OPTIMAL ADDITIONAL ONSHORE OBSERVATION.
