THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE PROPOSED EXPERIMENTS IS TO UNDERSTAND ELECTRON AND ION HEATING ACROSS HIGH-ALFVENIC-MACHNUMBER (M_A=5-20) QUASI-PERPENDICULAR COLLISIONLESS SHOCKS. THIS OBJECTIVE WILL BE PURSUED THROUGH WELL-CONTROLLED AND REPRODUCIBLE LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS THAT CAN CREATE A RANGE OF UPSTREAM CONDITIONS AND MAGNETIC GEOMETRIES IN A SYSTEM ANALOGOUS TO THE BOW SHOCK. IN PARTICULAR THE EXPERIMENTS WILL (1) MEASURE THE DEGREE TO WHICH ELECTRONS ARE HEATED NON-ADIABATICALLY ACROSS THE SHOCK (2) CORRELATE ELECTRON HEATING WITH BOTH LOCAL AND LARGE-SCALE SHOCK STRUCTURE AND (3) DETERMINE THE DEPENDENCE OF ELECTRON AND ION HEATING ON MACH NUMBER AND MAGNETIC GEOMETRY. THE PROPOSED PROJECT WILL ADDRESS LIMITATIONS IN THE USE OF MMS AND OTHER SPACECRAFT-DERIVED DATA TO INTERPRET PLASMA HEATING ACROSS THE BOW SHOCK.
