WE WILL PERFORM ANALYTICAL TRANSMISSION ELECTRON MICROSCOPY OF AMORPHOUS CONDENSATE GRAINS PRODUCED TO STUDY METASTABLE EUTECTIC CONDENSATION IN AMORPHOUS IRON AND MAGNESIUM ALUMINATES. THESE SAMPLES WILL BE PRODUCED IN DR NUTH S LABORATORY AT NASA GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER AND SENT TO UNM FOR ANALYSIS. WE WILL ALSO ANALYZE THE MORE COMPLEX FE-MG-AL-O-H CONDENSATES THAT DR. NUTH PRODUCES. IT IS ANTICIPATED THAT WE WILL ANALYZE APPROXIMATELY 10 SAMPLES PER YEAR. THESE ARE COMPLEX NANOMATERIALS THAT REQUIRED A HIGH LEVEL OF ELECTRON MICROSCOPIC SKILL TO ANALYZE IN DETAIL. WE HAVE THIS EXPERTISE AT UNM AND ARE RECOGNIZED FOR OUR RESEARCH ACTIVITIES IN THIS AREA. DR NUTH AND DR RIETMEIJER HAVE BEEN COLLABORATING ON THIS KIND OF PROJECT FOR SEVERAL YEARS. THIS WORK WILL PROVIDE CHEMICAL STRUCTURAL TEXTURAL GRAIN SIZE AND MORPHOLOGICAL DATA FOR A STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF GRAINS. IN ADDITION TO THE ANALYSIS OF THE SAMPLES WE WILL BE INVOLVED IN THE INTERPRETATION OF THE ANALYTICAL DATA AND THE PREPARATION OF MANUSCRIPTS FOR PUBLICATION AS THE PROJECT PROCEEDS.
