THE WORK TO BE DONE UNDER THE FINAL YEAR FUNDING WILL BE AS FOLLOWS. FIRST WE WILL COMPLETE THE STUDY ON THE NONLINEAR COMPETITION AMONG THE MIRROR ION BERNSTEIN AND ALFV N CYCLOTRON INSTABILITIES DRIVEN BY PICKUP IONS. WE HAVE RECENTLY DEMONSTRATED THAT THE MIRROR AND ION BERNSTEIN INSTABILITIES CAN PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE STABILITY OF THE PICKUP ION RING. WE ARE NOW EXAMINING HOW THIS ROLE MAY CHANGE IN THE PARAMETER SPACE OF THE PICKUP ION RING.
