THE NASA S EARTH POLYCHROMATIC IMAGING CAMERA (EPIC) ONBOARD NOAA S DEEP SPACE CLIMATE OBSERVATORY (DSCOVR) WAS LAUNCHED ON FEBRUARY 11 2015 TO THE SUN-EARTH LAGRANGIAN L1 POINT WHERE IT BEGAN TO COLLECT RADIANCE DATA OF THE ENTIRE SUNLIT EARTH EVERY 65 TO 110 MIN IN JUNE 2015. THE UNIQUENESS OF THE DSCOVR EPIC OBSERVING STRATEGY IS ITS ABILITY TO PROVIDE FREQUENT OBSERVATIONS OF EVERY REGION OF THE EARTH IN NEAR HOT SPOT DIRECTIONS THAT THE CONVENTIONAL POLAR ORBITING AND GEOSTATIONARY SATELLITES DO NOT HAVE. THE DSCOVR EPIC OBSERVATIONS THEREFORE PROVIDE UNIQUE INFORMATION REQUIRED TO EXTEND LIMITED ANGULAR SAMPLING OF THE EXISTING NASA S OPTICAL SENSORS TO THE HOT SPOT REGION. WE PROPOSE TO (A) DEVELOP A NEW METHODOLOGY THAT SYNERGISTICALLY INCORPORATES FEATURES OF TERRA MISR AND MODIS AQUA MODIS SUOMI NPP VIIRS AND DSCOVR EPIC OBSERVATION GEOMETRIES AND RESULTS IN A NEW TYPE OF HOT SPOT SIGNATURES THAT MAXIMALLY SENSITIVE TO VEGETATION CHANGES; (B) GENERATE HOT SPOT SIGNATURES OF DIFFERENT LAND COVER TYPES GLOBALLY FOR THE PERIOD OF CONCURRENT TERRA/AQUA/VIIRS AND EPIC DATA; (C) DEMONSTRATE ITS VALUE FOR MONITORING CHANGES AND BIOPHYSICAL PROCESSES IN TROPICAL AND BOREAL FORESTS. OUR PRIMARY MOTIVATION IS TO SUBSTANTIALLY IMPROVE THE VALUE AND CAPABILITIES OF EXISTING SURFACE REFLECTANCE PRODUCTS TO MONITOR CHANGES IN REMOTE VEGETATION SUCH AS EQUATORIAL AND BOREAL FORESTS. THE GLOBAL FOREST ECOSYSTEM ABSORBS ABOUT 25% OF THE TOTAL ANTHROPOGENIC CO2 EMISSION FROM ATMOSPHERE VIA CARBON ACCUMULATION TO FOREST BIOMASS. FORESTS STORE 75% OF TERRESTRIAL CARBON AND ACCOUNT FOR 40% OF THE CARBON EXCHANGE WITH ATMOSPHERE EACH YEAR. WITHIN THE FOREST ECOSYSTEMS TROPICAL FORESTS CONTAIN ABOUT 40-50% OF THE TERRESTRIAL CARBON STOCK AND POTENTIALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR ABOUT 70% OF TERRESTRIAL CARBON SINK. THE BOREAL FORESTS ARE INCREASING SUBJECT TO FIRE DISTURBANCES BUT ALSO BENEFITTING FROM INCREASED WARMING DUE TO CLIMATE CHANGE. MONITORING AND QUANTIFYING CHANGES IN TROPICAL AND BOREAL FORESTS THEREFORE PLAY A CRITICAL ROLE IN UNDERSTANDING THE GLOBAL CARBON CYCLE AND FUTURE CLIMATE CHANGE.
