WE PROPOSE TO UNDERTAKE A COMPREHENSIVE INVESTIGATION OF THE EARLY DEVELOPMENT AND PROPAGATION OF SERIES OF CORONAL MASS EJECTIONS (CMES) AND THE ASSOCIATED SOLAR ENERGETIC PARTICLE (SEP) ACCELERATION. TO DO SO WE WILL COMBINE (I) DATA ANALYSIS: REMOTE-SENSING OBSERVATIONS OF THE SOLAR CORONA REMOTE-SENSING OBSERVATIONS OF CMES IN SITU MEASUREMENTS OF SEPS RADIO MEASUREMENTS AND (II) NUMERICAL MODELS AND SIMULATIONS: MAGNETIC TOPOLOGY WITH THE POTENTIAL FIELD SOURCE SURFACE (PFSS) MODEL AND MHD SIMULATIONS MHD SIMULATIONS OF CMES AND FOCUSED TRANSPORT SIMULATION OF SEPS. THIS WILL BE THE FIRST DEDICATED INVESTIGATION OF SEPS AND SUCCESSIVE CMES BASED BOTH ON SIMULATIONS AND DATA ANALYSIS. ..THE OBJECTIVE OF OUR PROJECT IS TO IDENTIFY THE CONFIGURATIONS FAVORABLE FOR SEP ACCELERATION BY SERIES OF CMES AND UNDERSTAND THE PHYSICAL PROCESSES THAT LEAD TO THE PARTICLE ACCELERATION AND RELEASE. TO ADDRESS THE OBJECTIVE WE WILL ANSWER THREE SPECIFIC SCIENCE QUESTIONS (SQS): . SQ 1: WHAT TYPE OF MAGNETIC ENVIRONMENTS ARE FAVORABLE FOR SEP-RICH SERIES OF CMES? WE WILL LOOK AT TYPES OF SERIES OF CMES (SYMPATHETIC HOMOLOGOUS UNRELATED) AND NEIGHBORING MAGNETIC ENVIRONMENT (PSEUDOSTREAMERS CORONAL HOLES). . SQ 2: TO WHICH PHASE OF INTERACTION IF ANY DOES THE ACCELERATION AND RELEASE OF ENERGETIC PARTICLES CORRESPOND TO AND FOR WHICH PHYSICAL REASONS? WE WILL LOOK AT THE PROPAGATION OF A CME IN DISTURBED CORONA FOLLOWING A PREVIOUS CME THE INTERACTION OF THE SHOCK WAVE WITH THE TRAILING EDGE OF A PREVIOUS CME THE INTERACTION OF THE MAGNETIC EJECTA AND THAT OF THE SHOCK WAVES. . SQ 3: UNDER WHICH CIRCUMSTANCES MAY SEPS GET TRAPPED IN THE MAGNETIC EJECTA ASSOCIATED WITH A PREVIOUS CME? ..TO ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS WE WILL (1) STUDY ALL SEP-RICH CME EVENTS FROM SOLAR CYCLE 24 TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE STEREOSCOPIC VIEWS FROM STEREO AND THE HIGH-CADENCE OF SDO TO DETERMINE WHETHER THERE IS A PRECEDING CME IN DIRECTION OF THE MAIN CME WHETHER THERE IS DIRECT INTERACTION BETWEEN SOME PARTS OF THE CMES/SHOCKS AND AT WHAT DISTANCE THIS OCCURS (2) PERFORM COUPLED MHD-SEP NUMERICAL SIMULATIONS OF SERIES OF CMES WITH DIFFERENT TIME DELAY AND DIRECTION (3) STUDY THE MAGNETIC TOPOLOGY FOR ALL SEP-RICH AS WELL AS GEO-EFFECTIVE CMES TO DETERMINE WHICH CHARACTERISTICS ARE FAVORABLE TO CREATE GEO-EFFECTIVE OR SEP-RICH EVENTS. ..THIS PROPOSAL FOCUSES ON THE FIRST SECOND AND FOURTH KEY SCIENCE GOALS OF THE HELIOPHYSICS DECADAL SURVEY WITH A PARTICULAR EMPHASIS ON THE FOURTH ONE TO "DISCOVER AND CHARACTERIZE FUNDAMENTAL PROCESSES THAT OCCUR BOTH WITHIN THE HELIOSPHERE AND THROUGHOUT THE UNIVERSE" WHICH INCLUDES COLLISIONLESS SHOCKS. THE SCIENCE AREA WHICH IT COVERS IS "PARTICLE ACCELERATION TRANSPORT MODULATION IN THE HELIOSPHERE". NO CODE DEVELOPMENT IS REQUIRED TO ACCOMPLISH THE GOALS OF THE STUDY. MEASUREMENTS BY NASA SATELLITES WILL BE USED SPECIFICALLY FROM WIND STEREO GOES SDO SOHO AND ACE BOTH REMOTE (WHITE-LIGHT EUV) AND IN SITU. .
