WE PROPOSE USING CASSINI/VIMS NEAR-INFRARED SPECTRAL MAPPING OBSERVATIONS OF JUPITER AND SATURN TO PROVIDE SOLAR SYSTEM ANALOGS FOR EXTRASOLAR GIANT PLANETS AND CLOUDY BROWN DWARFS. BROWN DWARFS SHOW PHOTOMETRIC VARIABILITY ATTRIBUTABLE TO WEATHER BUT THE DETAILS THEREOF CANNOT BE DETERMINED FROM LIGHT-YEARS AWAY. HENCE BY ANALYZING THE NIGHT SIDES OF JUPITER AND SATURN WE WILL BOTH GENERATE DISK-INTEGRATED LIGHT CURVES AND BE ABLE TO ATTRIBUTE VARIATIONS IN THOSE LIGHTCURVES TO SPATIALLY-RESOLVED ATMOSPHERIC ACTIVITY. OUR THREE TASKS ARE (1) TO GENERATE DISK-INTEGRATED SPECTRA OF JUPITER AND SATURN AS A FUNCTION OF PHASE ANGLE FOR COMPARISON TO EXOPLANETS; (2) TO USE JUPITER'S PHOTOMETRIC VARIATIONS AS AN ANALOG FOR VARIABLE CLOUDY BROWN DWARFS; AND (3) TO DO THE SAME ANALYSIS FOR SATURN. THIS PROPOSAL IS RELEVANT TO NASA CDAP BECAUSE IT EMPLOYS DATA ANALYSIS OF VIMS OBSERVATIONS THAT WILL ENHANCE THE SCIENTIFIC RETURN FROM THE CASSINI MISSION.
