WITH THE RECENT LAUNCH OF THE SOIL MOISTURE ACTIVE PASSIVE SENSOR (SMAP) IN JANUARY 2015 AND THE GLOBAL PRECIPITATION MISSION (GPM) IN FEBRUARY 2014 NASA EARTH SCIENCE PRODUCTS CAN BE USED TO WORK ON REGIONAL APPLICATIONS AND ANSWER QUESTIONS ON THE AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTIVITY AND FOOD AND WATER SECURITY IN THE MEKONG RIVER BASIN. DOWNSCALING OF THE SMAP 36KM RADIOMETER ONLY SOIL MOISTURE WILL BE PERFORMED USING THE ESTABLISHED METHODOLOGY USING VISIBLE AND THERMAL NORMALIZED DIFFERENCE VEGETATION INDEX (NDVI) AND SURFACE TEMPERATURE DATA FROM MODIS (MODERATE RESOLUTION IMAGING SPECTRORADIOMETER) AND THE NASA GLOBAL LAND DATA ASSIMILATION SYSTEM (GLDAAS). WE WILL ALSO USE GRAVITY RECOVERY AND CLIMATE EXPERIMENT (GRACE) DATA ALONG WITH AMSR-E AND SMAP SOIL MOISTURE TO ESTIMATE SOIL HYDRAULIC PROPERTIES IN THE LOWER MEKONG RIVER BASIN USING ASSIMILATION IN GLDAS.
