BIOGENIC NONMETHANE VOLATILE ORGANIC COMPOUNDS (BVOCS) EMITTED BY TERRESTRIAL ECOSYSTEMS ARE OF GREAT IMPORTANCE TO AIR QUALITY TROPOSPHERIC CHEMISTRY AND CLIMATE DUE TO THEIR EFFECTS ON ATMOSPHERIC OXIDANTS AND AEROSOLS. YET BECAUSE OF THE INHERENT COMPLEXITY OF THESE EMISSIONS THEY REMAIN A HIGHLY UNCERTAIN COMPONENT IN OUR PREDICTIVE CAPACITY OF AIR QUALITY AND CHEMISTRYCLIMATE INTERACTIONS. WHILE SUBSTANTIAL PROGRESS HAS BEEN MADE TO IMPROVE THE COMMUNITY S ABILITY TO PREDICT BVOC EMISSIONS UNDER UNSTRESSED CONDITIONS THERE HAS BEEN RELATIVELY LITTLE EFFORT TO CHARACTERIZE BVOC EMISSIONS UNDER STRESSED CONDITIONS SUCH AS DROUGHT AND HEATWAVES TO WHICH THE RESPONSE OF BVOC EMISSIONS CAN BE SUBSTANTIALLY DIFFERENT FROM MODEL PREDICTIONS SUCH AS BY MEGAN2.1 IN THE ABSENCE OF ALGORITHMS THAT CAN ACCURATELY REPRESENT THE PROCESSES CONTROLLING THESE EMISSIONS UNDER STRESS CONDITIONS.
