THE MAIN SCIENTIFIC PURPOSE OF THIS BUDGET IS TO PROVIDE FUNDING FOR DATA ANALYSIS OF OBSERVATIONS OF JET-DOMINATED ACTIVE GALAXIES (KNOWN AS BLAZARS) TO BE CONDUCTED JOINTLY BY THE HARD-X-RAY-SENSITIVE NASA SATELLITE NUSTAR AND OTHER OBSERVATORIES SUCH AS FERMI GAMMA-RAY SPACE TELESCOPE AS WELL AS GROUND-BASED OPTICAL RADIO AND POSSIBLY VERY HIGH ENERGY GAMMA-RAY FACILITIES. THE PROPOSAL ASKED FOR FOUR TARGET-OF-OPPORTUNITY OBSERVATIONS OF OBJECTS IN THEIR FLARING STATES; SINCE THOSE FLARES LAST FOR WEEKS AT A TIME AND OCCUR RELATIVELY FREQUENTLY (AT LEAST ONCE A YEAR) THE LIKELIHOOD OF TRIGGERING IS QUITE HIGH. THE THREE OBJECTS EXPLICITLY INCLUDED IN THE PROPOSAL ARE FAMOUS BLAZARS 3C454.3 PKS1510-089 AND PKS 1222+216; THE FOURTH TARGET IS ANY BLAZAR FLARING TO AN EXCEPTIONALLY HIGH STATE AS DETERMINED BY FERMI LAT OBSERVATION TO EXCEED A FLUX OF 5 X 10-6 PHOTONS /CM2/S ABOVE 100 MEV. THE AIM OF THOSE OBSERVATIONS IS TO STUDY THE SPECTRAL AND VARIABILITY PROPERTIES OF THOSE SOURCES ACROSS ALL OBSERVABLE BANDS. THOSE ACTIVE GALAXIES ARE STRONG AND VARIABLE X-RAY AND GAMMA-RAY EMITTERS AND SUCH OBSERVATIONS WILL PROVIDE IMPORTANT NEW INSIGHT INTO THE PHYSICAL PROCESSES RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR BROAD-BAND ELECTROMAGNETIC EMISSION. THE ULTIMATE GOAL WILL BE TO LEARN ABOUT THEIR STRUCTURE AND SPECIFICALLY THE DETAILS OF THE ENERGY TRANSPORT FROM THE CENTRAL SOURCE TO THE DISSIPATION REGION BE IT A RELATIVISTIC JET OR CORONA SURROUNDING THE ACCRETION DISK. AN ADDITIONAL IMPORTANT GOAL ADDRESSED BY THIS INVESTIGATION WILL BE TO ASSESS WHETHER VARIOUS SOURCES STUDIED HERE CAN CONTRIBUTE SIGNIFICANTLY TO THE COSMIC X-RAY BACKGROUND IN THE HARD X-RAY BAND AND IF SO AT WHAT LEVEL. THE ENVISIONED OBSERVATIONS THAT WILL NEED TO BE ANALYZED INCLUDE: MONITORING OF THE THREE JET-DOMINATED ACTIVE GALAXIES JOINTLY WITH FERMI AND VHE OBSERVATORIES. IF TRIGGERED THE OBSERVATIONS WILL BE TAKEN IN FY 2018 AND 2019 AND THE DATA WILL BE ANALYZED OVER A TIME SPANNING 12 MONTHS SINCE THE RECEIPT OF DATA. NOTE THAT WE DO NOT KNOW AS YET WHEN THE OBSERVATIONS WILL TAKE PLACE AND THIS CAN BE AS LATE AS MAY 2019 SO WE WISH TO HAVE AT LEAST 7 MONTHS PAST THE LAST OBSERVATION TO FUND DATA ANALYSIS. OUR WORK CONTINUES ALONG WELL-DEFINED STAGES. THE NUSTAR-SPECIFIC TOOLS DEVELOPED FOR THE INITIAL DATA REDUCTION AND ANALYSIS HAVE BEEN INSTALLED AT KIPAC AND RUN RELIABLY. THE ANALYSIS INVOLVES VARIABILITY STUDIES AND DETAILED SPECTRAL FITTING OF NUSTAR AND OTHER DATA INCLUDING CROSS-CORRELATION OF TIME SERIES AMONGST VARIOUS SPECTRAL BANDS FOLLOWED BY MODELING OF THE OBSERVATIONS IN THE CONTEXT OF STANDARD MODELS OF RELATIVISTIC JETS AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP TO ACCRETION DISKS. AN IMPORTANT STEP IN THE ANALYSIS OF THE CONTRIBUTION OF THOSE SOURCES TO THE CXB WILL TAKE PLACE VIA COMBINING THE NUSTAR DATA WITH THE LUMINOSITY FUNCTION DERIVED FROM NUSTAR AS WELL AS THE SWIFT BAT AND FERMI DATA. WE INTEND TO WORK WITH A POST-DOCTORAL FELLOW AND PART OF THE FUNDING IS FOR THE PURPOSE OF COVERING THE POST-DOC S SALARY PAGE CHARGES REQUIRED FOR PUBLICATIONS OF TWO PAPERS PLUS SOME MODEST TRAVEL EXPENDITURES.
