THE AIM OF THIS RESEARCH IS TO CONSTRAIN THE IMPACT FLUX OF THE ASTEROID BELT AND THE INNER PLANETS BY INVESTIGATING THE IMPACT CHRONOLOGY OF MELT AND LITHIC CLASTS WITHIN ACHONDRITE METEORITES THROUGH CHARACTERIZATION USING PETROGRAPHIC AND ISOTOPIC STUDIES. A PARTICULAR COMPARISON CAN BE MADE WITH MELT CLASTS AND GLASSES FROM LUNAR SAMPLES WHICH DISPLAY A NOTABLE CLUSTER IN AGES AT ~3.9 GA BELIEVED TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH EITHER THE END OF A PERIOD OF HEAVY BOMBARDMENT OR A SUDDEN LUNAR CATACLYSM. REGARDLESS OF THE EXACT MECHANISM FOR THE OBSERVED CLUSTER ONE WOULD EXPECT TO FIND EVIDENCE OF SIMILAR MELT CHARACTERISTICS AND SIMILAR AGES WITHIN OTHER METEORITIC MATERIAL. CHRONOLOGICAL STUDIES OF MELT AND LITHIC CLASTS WITHIN ACHONDRITES WOULD THUS PROVIDE VALUABLE INFORMATION ABOUT THE EXTENT AND PREVALENCE OF EITHER LUNAR SCENARIO.
