SCOPE OF WORK: WE PROPOSE TO USE THEORETICAL AND NUMERICAL MODELING METHODS IN COMBINATION WITH OBSERVATIONAL ANALYSES CONDUCTED PRIMARILY BY OTHER PROJECT CO-IS TO UNDERSTAND (A) THE RELATION BETWEEN THE SURFACE VELOCITY MEASURED BY REMOTE SENSING AND THE MOTIONS BOTH WITHIN THE SURFACE BOUNDARY LAYER AND ACROSS ITS BASE; (B) THE DYNAMICS OF SUBMESOSCALE VELOCITY VORTICITY DIVERGENCE AND THE ASSOCIATED VERTICAL VELOCITY FIELDS; AND (C) ANALYZE AIR-SEA INTERACTIONS ASSOCIATED WITH SUBMESOSCALE OCEAN VARIABILITY FOCUSED PRIMARILY ON THE SURFACE WIND STRESS AND HEAT FLUXES AND HOW THESE COUPLED INTERACTIONS FEEDBACK ONTO SUBMESOSCALE OCEAN DYNAMICS. WORKING IN COLLABORATION WITH THE PROPOSED POSTDOCTORAL INVESTIGATOR AND IN COLLABORATION WITH OTHER PROJECT CO-IS WE WILL DEVELOP NEW INSIGHTS INTO UPPER OCEAN PHYSICAL PROCESSES BY COMBINING THEORETICAL AND NUMERICAL APPROACHES WITH THE NOVEL DOPPLERSCATT AIRBORNE OBSERVATIONS AND WITH OTHER IN-SITU MEASUREMENTS CONDUCTED BY OTHER PROJECT CO-IS. OUR EFFORTS WILL FOCUS PRIMARILY ON THEORETICAL AND NUMERICAL MODELING OF UPPER OCEAN DYNAMICS FROM THE OCEAN SURFACE THROUGH DEPTHS BELOW THE BASE OF THE SURFACE BOUNDARY LAYER AND COMPARISON OF THE THEORETICAL AND NUMERICAL RESULTS WITH OBSERVATIONS. WE WILL ALSO ASSIST IN DESIGNING AND COLLECTING IN SITU SHIPBOARD SURFACE FLUX OBSERVATIONS AND OBSERVATIONS OF THE LOWER ATMOSPHERE AT LEAST THROUGH THE DEPTH OF THE ATMOSPHERIC BOUNDARY LAYER. THESE ACTIVITIES WILL CONTRIBUTE DIRECTLY TO ALL FOUR OF THE OVERALL PROGRAM GOALS AND TO ANSWERING ALL THREE OF THE OVERALL PROGRAM SCIENCE QUESTIONS AS FRAMED IN THE IN-SITU MEASUREMENT SCENARIOS FOR DOPPLERSCATT EVS CAMPAIGNS DOCUMENT OF 30 NOVEMBER 2017 AND TO ADDRESS THE GOAL OF THIS EVS TO QUANTIFY THE ROLE OF AIR-SEA INTERACTION AND SURFACE FORCING IN THE DYNAMICS OF SUBMESOSCALE VARIABILITY AND THE EFFECT OF SUBMESOSCALE VARIABILITY ON AIR-SEA FLUXES. SPECIFICALLY WE SEEK TO UNDERSTAND AND QUANTIFY (A) THE RELATION OF SURFACE OCEAN VELOCITY FIELDS MEASURED BY DOPPLERSCATT TO THREE-DIMENSIONAL VELOCITY AND OTHER PHYSICAL UPPER OCEAN FIELDS (B) THE ASSOCIATED FUNDAMENTAL PHYSICAL PROCESSES AND (C) SUBMESOSCALE VARIABILITY IN SURFACE HEAT AND MOMENTUM FLUXES AND THEIR EFFECT ON SUBMESOSCALE OCEAN DYNAMICS THE ASSOCIATED ATMOSPHERIC RESPONSE AND COUPLED OCEAN-ATMOSPHERE INTERACTIONS.
