THIS PROJECT WILL PROCESS THE VERSION 6 OF THE GPM 2AKU REFLECTIVITY DATA TO A 3D CARTESIAN COORDINATE SYSTEM IN ORDER TO PROVIDE A USEFUL VERSION OF THIS DATASET TO A VARIETY OF RESEARCHERS AND THEIR PROJECTS. IN ADDITION IT WILL IDENTIFY ECHO OBJECTS BASED ON THE INTERPOLATED GPM DATA THAT CHARACTERIZE THE NATURE OF CONVECTION. IN ADDITION IT WILL ADD TO THE FUNCTIONALITY OF THE EXISTING TRMM INTERPOLATED DATA SET SO THAT IT CONTAINS ALL THE FEATURES OF THE NEWER GPM DATA SET. FINALLY THIS PROJECT WILL CONTINUE TO REFINE THE GPM CONVECTIVE-STRATIFORM IDENTIFICATION ALGORITHM. IN INITIAL VERSIONS OF THE GPM ALGORITHM USED TO DELINEATE CONVECTIVE/STRATIFORM ENVIRONMENTS STRATIFORM PRECIPITATION WAS MISIDENTIFIED AS CONVECTIVE DUE TO THE HIGH REFLECTIVITY VALUES OFTEN ASSOCIATED WITH BRIGHTBANDS PRESENT IN STRATIFORM ENVIRONMENTS. THE UPDATED ALGORITHM CORRECTS THIS MISIDENTIFICATION AND HAS BEEN IMPLEMENTED IN VERSION 6 (V06) OF THE GPM DATA. PRELIMINARY TESTING SHOWS THAT THERE ARE STILL SOME PROBLEMS WITH THE ALGORITHM THAT NEED TO BE ADDRESSED. THESE ACTIVITIES WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE ACCURACY OF THE GPM DATA PRODUCTS THAT ARE USED BY RESEARCHERS WORLDWIDE.
