THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII ANITA GROUP (HPG) CONSISTS OF PROFESSORS PETER GORHAM GARY VARNER KURTIS NISHIMURA; INSTRUMENT PHYSICIST CHRISTIAN MIKI AND PHD CANDIDATE REMY PRECHELT ALONG WITH A PLANNED POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER A NEW GRADUATE STUDENT AND SEVERAL UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH ASSISTANTS. OUR PRIMARY AREAS OF EXPERTISE ARE IN RADIO FREQUENCY DE- SIGN DEVELOPMENT IMPLEMENTATION AND PRODUCTION; AND IN APPLICATION-SPECIFIC INTEGRATED CIRCUIT AND ASSOCIATED ELECTRONICS DESIGN DEVELOPMENT IMPLEMENTATION AND PRODUCTION. OUR UH GROUP HAS ALSO BEEN PRIMARILY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ANITA GONDOLA DESIGN AND PRODUCTION AND AS THE ANITA GONDOLA WILL PROVIDE THE BASIS FOR THE FUTURE PAYLOAD FOR ULTRAHIGH ENERGY OBSERVATIONS (PUEO) GONDOLA WE WILL CONTRIBUTE IN THAT AREA AS WELL.. FOR THE SUSTAINING ENGINEERING PROVIDED BY THE ANITA-V BRIDGE FUNDING WE PLAN TO FOCUS ON THE DEVELOPMENT AND IMPROVEMENT OF OUR EQUIPMENT AND METHODOLOGY FOR THE MEASUREMENT OF RADIO-FREQUENCY NOISE FIGURE OF PRIMARY ANITA RECEIVER COMPONENTS. NOISE FIGURE IS THE CHARACTERISTIC OF A RADIO RECEIVER WHICH IS MOST FUNDAMENTAL TO DETERMINING THE NOISE FLOOR AND THUS THE ULTIMATE SENSITIVITY OF THE RECEIVER. FOR ANITA CRITICAL RECEIVER COMPONENTS SUCH AS THE LOW-NOISE PREAMPLIFIER THE FRONT-END FILTERS AND THE ANTENNAS ALL REQUIRE PRECISE MEASUREMENTS OF THEIR NOISE FIGURE AND CURRENT ANITA METHODS AND EQUIPMENT ARE BECOMING AGE-LIMITED IN THEIR PERFORMANCE PRECISION AND ACCURACY. .
