PROJECT GOALS: RECENT NASA ORBITAL MISSIONS AND INSTRUMENTS SUCH AS GRAIL LRO AND M3 HAVE PROVIDED A NEW VIEW OF THE MOON THAT WAS UNAVAILABLE IN THE 1970S WHEN THE LUNA SAMPLE RETURN MISSIONS WERE CARRIED OUT BY THE SOVIET UNION. THESE NEW MISSIONS PROVIDE VALUABLE INFORMATION FOR THE REGION SAMPLED BY THE LUNA MISSIONS AND HAVE ENABLE NEW INTERPRETATIONS OF THE GEOLOGY FOR THIS REGION. FOR EXAMPLE GRAIL DATA FOR THE CRISIUM BASIN INDICATE THAT THIS IMPACT EVENT EXCAVATED LUNAR MANTLE. THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO PLACE THE LUNA SAMPLES THAT RESIDE IN BOTH THE US LUNAR FACILITY AT THE JOHNSON SPACE CENTER AND THE RUSSIAN FACILITY AT THE VERNADSKY INSTITUTE INTO A MODERN CONTEXT. APPROACH AND METHODOLOGY: THE PROJECT GOALS WILL BE ACCOMPLISHED IN THREE STEPS: (1) INTERPRET THE REMOTELY SENSED DATA INTO STRUCTURAL AND THERMAL MODELS FOR THE LUNAR CRUST AND MANTLE IN THE CRISIUM BASIN AND ADJACENT AREAS (2) MODEL THE IMPACT EVENT BASED ON THE INTERPRETATIONS FROM (1) AND (3) EXAMINE THE LUNA SAMPLE SUITE WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF NEW GEOLOGICAL INTERPRETATIONS AND DYNAMIC MODELING. THE SAMPLE ANALYSIS WILL BE PERFORMED ONLY IN THE CONTEXT OF THE M3 DATA ANALYSIS IN THAT WE NEED TO CHARACTERIZE THESE SAMPLES AND PLACE THEM IN THE REGIONAL CONTEXT ESTABLISHED BY THE REMOTELY SENSED DATA. RELEVANCE: THIS HAS HIGH RELEVANCE TO THE LDAP PLANETARY SCIENCE AND NASA IN THAT IT PROVIDES AN UNDERSTANDING OF SOLAR SYSTEM PROCESSES PROVIDES INSIGHTS INTO THE RESPONSE OF THE MOON TO THESE PROCESSES AND ESTABLISHES ANOTHER PATHWAY FOR FUTURE US-RUSSIAN COOPERATION.
