WILDFIRE IS A PRIMARY THREAT TO MUNICIPAL WATER SUPPLIES WHEREVER FORESTED WATERSHEDS ARE VULNERABLE TO CATASTROPHIC FIRES WITH THIS THREAT INCREASING RAPIDLY ACROSS MUCH OF FORESTED WESTERN NORTH AMERICA. HOWEVER LITTLE INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE TO UTILITIES TO HELP PLAN FOR SUCH DISASTERS DESPITE THE FACT THAT SUCH EVENTS COULD CREATE SIGNIFICANT NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCES FOR THE DRINKING WATER SUPPLY OF MILLIONS OF PEOPLE. WE PROPOSE TO LEVERAGE OUR EXISTING WATER UTILITY CONNECTIONS AND ECOHYDROLOGIC MODELS WITH SATELLITE OBSERVATIONS TO CREATE A WEB-BASED DECISION SUPPORT TOOL THAT PROVIDES WILDFIRE PREDICTIONS NEEDED BY DRINKING WATER UTILITIES TO UNDERSTAND HOW AND WHERE FIRE WILL AFFECT THEIR WATERSHEDS AND WATER SUPPLY INFRASTRUCTURE. THE TOOL PROPOSED HERE WEPP-PREDICTING UTILITY FUTURE FIRE (PUFF) WILL PROVIDE HIGH-QUALITY REGIONAL-SCALE PREDICTIONS OF WILDFIRE IMPACTS TO WATERSHEDS THROUGH AN ACCESSIBLE USER INTERFACE DESIGNED TO SUPPORT BOTH LONG-TERM PLANNING AND SHORT-TERM MONITORING AND RESPONSE FOR UTILITY DECISION-MAKING. OUR TRANSDISCIPLINARY TEAM OF WATER UTILITY PARTNERS WATER RESOURCE RESEARCHERS ECOHYDROLOGICAL AND SOIL EROSION/TRANSPORT MODELERS WILDFIRE REMOTE SENSING SCIENTISTS AND VISUALIZATION EXPERTS FORM AN EXPERIENCED PARTNERSHIP TO ENSURE PROJECT SUCCESS.
