THE LATEST LANDSAT THERMAL BAND SENSORS ARE AN IMPORTANT ASPECT OF THE LANDSAT MISSION AS THEY PROVIDE HIGH QUALITY DATA CONTINUITY FOR THE THERMAL BAND. AS SUCH THEIR CONTINUED RADIOMETRIC CALIBRATION IS KEY TO LANDSAT MISSION SUCCESS ESPECIALLY AS NASA/USGS MOVES TOWARDS HIGHER-LEVEL PRODUCTS. THE SCOPE OF THIS WORK SPANS THREE BROAD CATEGORIES TO ENSURE THE SUCCESS OF THE PRESENT PAST AND FUTURE OF THE LANDSAT THERMAL BAND CALIBRATION. THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVE IS TO CONTINUE TO SUPPORT CALIBRATION ACTIVITIES FOR THE LANDSAT 9/TIRS-2 INSTRUMENT THROUGH PRE-FLIGHT INSTRUMENT AND OBSERVATORY TESTING LAUNCH AND ON-ORBIT COMMISSIONING AND TRANSITION TO NOMINAL OPERATIONS. THE TIRS-2 INSTRUMENT WILL SOON BE DELIVERED TO THE LANDSAT 9 OBSERVATORY FOR INTEGRATION AND ENVIRONMENTAL TESTING. WE WILL SUPPORT THE POST-DELIVERY FUNCTIONAL TESTING AND INTEGRATED FUNCTIONAL TESTING BY ENSURING SUCCESSFUL DATA FLOWS FROM THE FOCAL PLANE THROUGH THE INSTRUMENT AND OBSERVATORY. WE WILL ALSO ANALYZE SCIENCE IMAGE DATA AND TELEMETRY FROM OBSERVATORY ENVIRONMENTAL TESTING FROM THE EMI AND TVAC CAMPAIGNS. THIS WILL INVOLVE ENSURING THE DATA QUALITY OF THE SCIENCE IMAGES AS COMPARED TO INSTRUMENT-LEVEL TESTS AND CONFIRMING THE EXPECTED NUMBER OF DATA LINES FOR EACH TEST. FURTHERMORE WE WILL COORDINATE WITH THE USGS GROUND SYSTEM TEAM TO ADDRESS ANY ANOMALIES THAT MAY OCCUR WHEN PUSHING SCIENCE DATA THROUGH THE GROUND PROCESSING AND PRODUCT GENERATION SYSTEM. THE SECONDARY OBJECTIVES OF THIS WORK INVOLVE SUPPORT FOR LANDSAT 8 ON-ORBIT CALIBRATION AND PRODUCT GENERATION AND SUPPORT FOR ANY FUTURE LANDSAT THERMAL INSTRUMENTS. WE WILL CONTINUE TO TREND AND CHARACTERIZE THE RADIOMETRIC PERFORMANCE OF THE LANDSAT 8/TIRS-1 INSTRUMENT CURRENTLY OPERATING ON-ORBIT. DATA FROM ROUTINE CALIBRATION ACTIVITIES WILL BE ANALYZED AND UPDATES TO THE INSTRUMENT CALIBRATION ARE TO BE IMPLEMENTED AS NECESSARY. THIS WILL ALSO INVOLVE COORDINATION WITH THE LANDSAT SCIENCE TEAM TO HELP DEMONSTRATE AND DOCUMENT THE PERFORMANCE OF ANY NEW SCIENCE PRODUCT THAT WILL BE RELEASED TO USERS. ADDITIONALLY WE WOULD SUPPORT ANY FUTURE INSTRUMENT CONCEPTS AND/OR HARDWARE FOR THE NEXT GENERATION LANDSAT THERMAL BAND. THIS WORK WOULD INVOLVE MODELING AND DATA ANALYSES TO INFORM INSTRUMENT DESIGNS AND/OR THE PROCESSING OF ENGINEERING OR FLIGHT HARDWARE DATA TO CHARACTERIZE THE RADIOMETRIC PERFORMANCE OF THE INSTRUMENT OR COMPONENT. THE YEARS OF CALIBRATION EXPERIENCE WITH THE TIRS-1 AND TIRS-2 INSTRUMENTS WILL BE LEVERAGED TO HELP MAINTAIN LANDSAT S STRONG EMPHASIS ON CALIBRATION AND ACCURACY.
