THE OBJECTIVES OF THIS MARS DATA ANALYSIS PROJECT ARE TO RESOLVE ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROLS ON SEASONAL FORMATION OF DOWNSLOPE FLOWS EMANATING FROM DARK DUNE SPOTS (DDS) AT ONE OR TWO DUNE FIELDS IN THE MID-LATITUDES OF THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE OF MARS AND DETERMINE IF THESE FEATURES REPRESENT AREAS WHERE BRINE MAY BE EPISODICALLY METASTABLE ON/NEAR THE SURFACE OR IF OTHER PROCESSES SUCH AS DESTABILIZED DRY SAND FLOWS ARE AT WORK. MULTITEMPORAL MARS IMAGE AND DATA ANALYSES ARE EXPECTED TO REVEAL INTERACTIONS BETWEEN SEASONAL INSOLATION SAND AND DUST AND CONDENSED VOLATILES (H2O AND CO2) THAT PRODUCE PHASE TRANSITIONS AND TRIGGER GRAVITATIONAL MASS WASTING ON SAND DUNE SLIPFACES.
