THIS PROPOSAL IS FOR THE PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR (PI) TO SERVE AS THE NASA EARTH OBSERVING SYSTEM (EOS) MODERATE RESOLUTION IMAGING SPECTRO-RADIOMETER (MODIS) SCIENCE TEAM LEADER. THE MODIS INSTRUMENT WAS DEVELOPED BY NASA AND LAUNCHED ONBOARD THE TERRA SPACECRAFT ON DECEMBER 18 1999 AND AQUA SPACECRAFT ON MAY 4 2002. AS THE MODIS SCIENCE TEAM LEADER (MSTL) THE PI IN SUPPORT OF AND IN COLLABORATION WITH THE MODIS PROGRAM SCIENTIST AT NASA HEADQUARTERS AND THE MODIS PROJECT SCIENTIST AT GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER (GSFC) WILL PROVIDE SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL GUIDANCE AND OVERSIGHT FOR THE COLLECTIVE ACTIVITIES OF THE MO DIS SCIENCE TEAM COMPOSED OF OVER 59 PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATORS AS WELL AS THE MODIS SUPPORT TEAMS INCLUDING THE MODIS CHARACTERIZATION SUPPORT TEAM (MCST) THE SCIENCE DATA SUPPORT TEAM (SDST) AND THE MODIS ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT TEAM (MAST). THE PI WILL ALSO CONTINUE RESEARCH INVOLVING THE USE OF THE MODIS OBSERVATIONS FOR EARTH SCIENCE STUDIES WITH EMPHASIS ON THE CALIBRATION AND GENERAL INSTRUMENT PERFORMANCE OF THE MO DIS INSTRUMENTS AND THE USE OF MODIS OBSERVATIONS FOR OBSERVING THE GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION OF CLOUD OPTICAL AND MICROPHYSICAL PROPERTIES AND THEIR VARIATION WITH SPACE TIME OF DAY (TERRA VS AQUA) AND TIME OF YEAR (SEASON). TO FURTHER COMPLEMENT AND AUGMENT THE ACTIVITIES JUST INDICATED THE PI WILL WORK WITH EDUCATION AND OUTREACH PERSONNEL AT GSFC AND NASA HEADQUARTERS TO PUBLICIZE AND SUMMARIZE KEY MODIS SCIENCE AND APPLICATIONS EFFORTS THAT SUPPORT NASA EARTH SCIENCE PROGRAMMATIC EFFORTS AND DESCRIBE THE BENE FITS OF THESE PROGRAMS AND PLANS FOR THE FUTURE. FURTHERMORE THE PI WILL TAKE ACTIONS TO ENSURE INSOFAR AS POSSIBLE THAT MODIS REFERENCE DOCUMENTS SUCH AS THE MODIS WEB PAGE MODIS ALGORITHM THEORETICAL BASIS DOCUMENTS (ATBDS) USER GUIDES ETC. ARE KEPT CURRENT SO AS TO IMPROVE THE UTILITY OF THESE DOCUMENTS IN SUPPORTING USER COMMUNITY NEEDS FOR MOD IS INFORMATION.
