THE SEARCH FOR LIFE IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM REMAINS ONE OF NASA'S HIGHEST PRIORITY SCIENTIFIC OBJECTIVES (I) (2) THE COMMUNITY CONSENSUS IS THAT EUROPA HARBORS LIQUID WATER BENEATH AN ICY CRUST (10 KM) WHICH HAS RAISED THE POSSIBILITY THAT LIFE OR CONDITIONS FAVORABLE FOR LIFE MAY EXIST ON THAT MOON (3). AT NASA GODDARD WE ARE DEVELOPING AN IN SITU CHEMISTRY EXPERIMENT - USCOPE PHOTOLUMINESCENCE AND RAMAN OBSERVATIONS ON EUROPA (ICE PROBE) INSTRUMENT THAT WILL ADDRESS 10 OF THE 23 SCIENCE INVESTIGATIONS IN THE SCIENCE TRACEABILITY MATRIX (STM) OF THE EUROPA LANDER STUDY 2016 REPORT (4) UPDATED SCIENCE GOALS (5) AS RECOMMENDED BY THE SCIENCE DEFINITION TEAM (SD) TO DO THIS OM INSTRUMENT (FIG.1) WILL CARRY OUT TIME RESOLVED RAMAN AND PHOTOLUMINESCENCE (PL) SPECTROSCOPY OF ICE SAMPLES COLLECTED FROM THE SURFACE TO 10 CM BELOW THE SURFACE TO DISCOVER IF PRESENT THE TYPES AND DISTRIBUTION OF BIOTIC AND A BIOTIC ORGANIC COMPOUNDS MEASURE CHNOPS CONTAINING ORGANICS AND MINERALS AND CORRELATE THEM TO RADIOLYSIS PROCESSED AND TEXTURAL FEATURES. OUR INSTRUMENT INCLUDES AN OPTICAL MICROSCOPE (NOT SHOWN IN FIG. 1) TO SEARCH FOR CELLS BIOGENIC MICROSTRUCTURES AND OTHER BIOSIGNATURES OVER THE MISSION DURATION AND FURHUR TO PROVIDE CONTEXT IMAGING FOR THE SPECTROSCOPY. TO ADDRESS THE HABITABILITY SCIENCE GOAL THE MICROSCOPE WOULD INVESTIGATE TEXTURAL PATTERNS OF SPATIAL VARIABILITY IN THE DELIVERED SAMPLE. THE MICROSCOPE WOULD ALSO CHARACTERIZE TEXTURAL AND STRUCTURAL PROPERTIES OF THE SAMPLE TO SUPPORT THE ASSESSMENT OF EUROPA SURFACE MATERIAL PHYSICAL PROPERTIES TO ADDRESS SURFACE CHARACTERIZATION GOALS. CHARACTERIZATION OF CHANGES IN ICE AND OTHER SURFACE MATERIALS IN RESPONSE TO LANDING AND SAMPLE COLLECTION WOULD ALSO BE PERFORMED TO SEARCH FOR CHEMICAL PROCESSES AFFECTING MATERIALS ON EUROPA. ANALYSIS AND ULTIMATE UNDERSTANDING OF MICROSCOPE IMAGES WILL REQUIRE CLEVER TECHNIQUES FOR RAPID IDENTIFICATION OF CELLULAR BIOTIC AND ABIOTIC MATERIALS WE THEREFORE PROPOSE ADVANCED MACHINE LEARNING TECHNIQUES AND DIAGNOSTICS OF ACQUIRED MICROSCOPE 2D TOPOGRAPHIC IMAGES OF SAMPLES.
