THE INVESTIGATION OF MICROPHYSICS AND PRECIPITATION FOR ATLANTIC COST-THREATING SNOWSTORMS (IMPACTS) FIELD DEPLOYMENT IS A FIVE-YEAR MISSION AND THE FIRST ONE OF ITS KIND TO USE A FULL SUITE OF MODERN INSTRUMENTATION TO SPECIFICALLY FOCUS ON THE STUDY AND IDENTIFICATION OF DISRUPTIVE EAST COAST US SNOWFALL AND WINTER STORMS. IMPACTS WAS COMPETITIVELY SELECTED FOR FUNDING IN RESPONSE TO ROSES 2017 SOLICITATION NNH17ZDA001N UNDER NASA S EARTH VENTURE SUBORBITAL-3 PROGRAM. WINTER SNOWSTORMS ARE FREQUENT ON THE EASTERN SEABOARD WHERE A LARGE PERCENTAGE OF THE US POPULATION LIVES AND CAUSE MAJOR DISRUPTIONS TO TRANSPORTATION COMMERCE AND PUBLIC SAFETY. SNOWFALL WITHIN THESE STORMS IS FREQUENTLY ORGANIZED IN BANDED STRUCTURES THAT ARE POORLY UNDERSTOOD BY SCIENTISTS AND POORLY PREDICTED BY CURRENT NUMERICAL MODELS. DESPITE THIS NO MAJOR STUDY OF EAST COAST US SNOWSTORMS HAS OCCURRED OVER THE LAST 30 YEARS. SINCE THAT LAST STUDY THE CAPABILITIES OF REMOTE SENSING TECHNOLOGIES AND NUMERICAL WEATHER PREDICTION MODELS HAVE ADVANCED SIGNIFICANTLY MAKING NOW AN IDEAL TIME TO CONDUCT A WELL-EQUIPPED SNOWSTORM STUDY TO IDENTIFY KEY PROCESSES AND IMPROVE REMOTE SENSING AND FORECASTING OF SNOWFALL. IMPACTS WILL FLY A COMPLEMENTARY SUITE OF REMOTE SENSING AND IN-SITU INSTRUMENTS FOR THREE 6-WEEK DEPLOYMENTS ON THE NASA S ER-2 AND P-3 AIRCRAFT. IMPACTS WILL ADDRESS THREE SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES PROVIDING OBSERVATIONS CRITICAL TO UNDERSTANDING THE MECHANISMS OF SNOWBAND FORMATION ORGANIZATION AND EVOLUTION. AT THE SAME TIME IMPACTS WILL ALSO EXAMINE HOW THE MICROPHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND LIKELY GROWTH MECHANISMS OF SNOW PARTICLES VARY ACROSS SNOWBAND WHILE IMPROVING SNOWFALL REMOTE SENSING INTERPRETATION AND MODELING TO SIGNIFICANTLY ADVANCE PREDICTIVE CAPABILITIES. THE BASE OF OPERATIONS FOR THE NASA P-3 IS PLANNED TO BE LOCATED AT NASA S WALLOPS FLIGHT FACILITY AND FOR THE ER-2 AT USAG HUNTER AAF NEAR SAVANNA GA. THIS PROPOSAL SETS OUT THE WORK AND BUDGET FOR THE BAER INSTITUTE PERSONNEL IN SUPPORTING THE IMPACTS MISSION. PERSONNEL FROM BAER INSTITUTE WILL PLAY INTEGRAL ROLES IN THE FIELD DEPLOYMENT MANAGEMENT (FDM) TEAM FROM NASA AMES RESEARCH CENTER S EARTH SCIENCE PROJECT OFFICE (ESPO). THE FDM TEAM WILL WORK WITH THE LEAD PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON TO MANAGE THE INVESTIGATION IMPLEMENT THE FIELD DEPLOYMENTS AND COORDINATE RELEVANT ASPECTS OF PROGRAMMATIC REPORTING AT INVESTIGATION STATUS REVIEWS.
