THE GOAL OF THE PROPOSED RESEARCH IS TO IMPROVE THE FORECAST TOOLS THAT ARE USED TO SUPPORT SPACECRAFT LAUNCH OPERATIONS. LAUNCH PROVIDERS NEED ACCURATE FORECASTS OF SOLAR PARTICLE EVENTS (SPES) TO THE PERFORM RISK ASSESSMENTS THAT WILL INFORM THEIR DECISIONS ON WHETHER TO PROCEED WITH PLANNED LAUNCH OPERATIONS. THESE RISK ASSESSMENTS TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE LAUNCH TRAJECTORY THE VULNERABILITY OF THE AVIONICS AND THE SPACE RADIATION ENVIRONMENT FOR UP TO SEVEN HOURS FOLLOWING LAUNCH. THE COST OF SCRUBBING A LAUNCH IS ESTIMATED BY NASA TO BE ~1.2M$ LOWER BEFORE THE FUEL IS LOADED. THIS IS AN INCENTIVE TO MAKE CAREFUL RISK ASSESSMENTS BEGINNING WITH THE FORECAST BEFORE ANY OUTBURST OCCURS ON THE SUN AND CONTINUING RIGHT UP TO LAUNCH.
