PAST ATTEMPTS TO UNDERSTAND THE INTERANNUAL VARIABILITY OF LARGE DUST STORMS ON MARS HAVE MET WITH LIMITED SUCCESS. THE GOAL OF THE PROPOSED WORK IS TO EXPLORE THREE POSSIBLE MECHANISMS FOR PRODUCING SUCH VARIABILITY AND TO ASSESS THEIR RELATIVE IMPORTANCE AND CONTRIBUTIONS. GLOBAL DUST STORMS (GDS) HAVE A HUGE IMPACT ON MARS'S WEATHER AND CLIMATE. YET THE EXACT CAUSES OF GDS INITIATION WHAT DETERMINES ONSET TIME AND LOCATION AND WHY THEY OCCUR IN ONLY SOME YEARS REMAIN UNKNOWN. A BETTER UNDERSTANDING AND MODEL REPRESENTATION OF GDS ACTIVITY WOULD RESULT IN BETTER SIMULATIONS OF SURFACE CONDITIONS DURING A GDS IMPROVED CONFIDENCE IN PALEO-MARS MODELING AND POTENTIALLY THE ABILITY TO FORECAST GDS.
